When Should Your Trim..

Does anyone trim their leaves on the lower portion of the plant. Seems as though the smaller stems at the bottom are stretching way far to get to the light. I am using a 600 watt HPS bulb but is that enough for vegging or is some blue spectrum bulbs really necessary. It has about 25 tops total well at the top the other shoots are trying to catch up.
