With extension cords, length has as much to do with it as load. The longer the run and the heavier the load the thicker gauge extension cord you should use. Rule of thumb if the wire is warm you're risking a fire already so back it off about half from there. FWIW, even if you ran 15 85W CFL's (the 350w equivalent big giant bulbs) you'd probably be ok with a good heavy duty extension cord. That's only just over 10Amps.
