would a normal extension cord be enough to wire a few of these fixtures in a row?

define "few" and how much W per light. But in general, i dont think it should be a problem.

With extension cords, length has as much to do with it as load. The longer the run and the heavier the load the thicker gauge extension cord you should use. Rule of thumb if the wire is warm you're risking a fire already so back it off about half from there. FWIW, even if you ran 15 85W CFL's (the 350w equivalent big giant bulbs) you'd probably be ok with a good heavy duty extension cord. That's only just over 10Amps.

well if you look at the link in my sig, I got pictures of 5 light sockets wired up with 16/2 lamp cord all together.. w/ a 15amp plug in. you just have to figure out how many lights you want and how many amps those lights will use
