If you have the space, for a 5 gallon pot and large plant, more soil would be beneficial for a lot of reasons. More nutrients, more air, more water, more microbes etc.

Smaller pots also cause you to have to water more which can lead to fungus gnats if your in soil or coco. Ask me how I know? They wouldn't even touch my plants in big pots that only needed watering every 3 or 4 days but I couldn't get rid of them in the ones I had to water every 2 days religiously.
