Do you think we, the people of Earth, will ever get to the point where all this shit will be behind us? There is no doubt that many people don't want to see the divisiveness end because they are heavily invested in maintaining it.

Harrekin keeps saying that in Europe this stuff is not a problem, though I have a hard time believing it, what with the massive riots in France and such.
idk desert, i'd like to think so, but have my doubts..
too many people take pride in saying being born in a certain country, like being born in say america as opposed to say iraq, makes anyone a better human being.. i'm not saying people shouldn't have pride in who they are or where they're from, but it's surely not the end all, be all answer to all of our problems, and imvho, only creates my problems then it solves..

Very simple, and a non-issue.

Negro, prior to the Civil Rights movement and up to the early 70's, was an acceptable term, considered less derogatory than "black". Since then it has changed.

This form, which is government manufactured, is severely outdated but not with ill intention. The form needs to be updated.

No story here.

If you're trying to identify someone, you'd say, what, the person has a big nose, tattoo down their arm, black skin,, sexy lil ass, etc etc.. no?
Or maybe she was a small white chic, blonde hair, small nose and a flat ass.. while being white or black doesn't make any difference as to the persons ability, it is surely a descriptive term..
First, people are black...negro is black. If it is offensive people should just respect that and be polite and stop using the word. Could the races be different in actuality? I think they are, I am not a racist. If saying something like blacks are fast runners for instance is over the line than have we become too sensitive. I am of mixed race and religion and statistically have aptitudes.....so what? These shouldn't be taboo to discuss in my opinion. Saying praise about race is racist? It is dishonest to ignore and as long as hate or disrespect are not involved I don't see the problem. I think at the very least it can be a discussion.

Where di anyone say they were picking on someone elses family. If a black man and a white man use the same term without any racism behind it, it is racism, unless the receiver simply decides it is.

That's the whole point of this thread. A woman thought that negro on the form was racist, yet it was there because of the large number of people perfectly happy to be deemed a negro.

If my girlfriend tells me that she finds black racist and offensive, should i call you a racist for using the word black to describe black people?
That same family mentality can apply to any group that has something in common. Its still valid. I can talk shit to my friends as much as I want. You, however, have no right to do the same.

Is your situation exclusionary? Yes. Is it racist? No. Racism was about superiority last I checked; not about special priveleges granted with inclusion to a group.

I guess that's where you are from and the crowd you are in. It's pretty 50/50 here and if you want to be descriptive, you say white guy-black guy. We never say African American at our hospital, there are 12 of them (African citizens that either are, or will be American citizens) and 8 are white. It's an offensive term to actual Africans.
well that's why when someone asks me to describe someone i don't include usually include race as part of the description in a social setting..however for work and patients obviously you would describe a patient/case as white male, 42, blah, blah, blah.

lol. yes, very true, i got about 3 pages into the thread, some of these guys really get defensive about political correctness, almost as if they are deliberately trying to hide their racist tendencies.

Yet it's so outdated that that they included negro in the 2010 census because of the old outdated people who still wanted to be classified as negros. How can something be outdated if there are still people wishing to be classified as that?

Yankie is pretty outdated, the war is long over, yet there are still people proud to call themselves yankies, they do not consider it outdated. But who they are.

Surely it is offensive not to accept their wish to be classified as a negro if that is indeed their wish, as seems to be the case. The very fact that there was the choice of black, african american, and negro clearly indicates that there was nothing derogative about it. If there was no choice but say white, or negro, that would be a different story. Negro was included as an option alongside black and african american because there are people who still identify themselves as negros, not black, or african american.

You're absolutely correct in there being no story here though. People want to be able to identify themselves as engro, hence the option, so what is the issue.

Back to this?
They removed it.

My friend half caste Paul gets upset when folk tell him he should refer to himself as mixed race.

Negro is espanol for black. "A Negro" is an outdated southern racial slur. In english you say "black man", in espanol it's just "negro" or "hombre negro". And there you have it... PS> It's a juror form, race and sex and the like matter when trying to put together a jury.
"A Negro" is not a slur. Some people just like to whine. "Black" was considered a slur up until the late 70's, now "colored", once the preferred adjective, is considered offensive. But "Negro" has never been commonly considered a slur.

The blacks on RIU are most likely amused watching a bunch of us whites arguing over what offends them.

Words only have power if you give it to them.

Once again I agree that subbing the word unborn baby for fetus was done in an attempt to provoke an emotional response.. Asking if your pro abortion or pro murdering innocent babies are two very different questions imvho as a fetus IMO isn't considered a baby until it's able to function on its own outside of the womb..
By that definition, a small percentage of abortions are done on babies who are able to function outside the womb. Hell, some "abortions" are preformed on babies already outside the womb and fully functioning, other than not being able to vote.

how old would you have to be to be able to function outside of the womb as an independent being red? i'd think, maybe 5 months minimum, and more likely 6 or so, no?
i've never heard of a normal abortion performed on a 5 or 6 month old fetus, unless of course it was a medical reason to do so..
