Goodbye Moms - Starting new in 2014

Don't you hate saying goodbye to a great mom or two? It almost breaks my heart to let 'em go, but new girls are already popped to replace the chernobyl and Ripped Bubba moms that were so good to me in 2013. Here's the baby pics:
2014 002.jpg2014 004.jpg Left to right are Somango [Soma], Melon Gum [ Dr Underground], and Cheese Dom [Freedom of Seeds] which is another go 'round on this - still loving the last one. The other three are the backups: Emerald Jack, Pineapple Skunk [Humboldt] and Kolossus [Sannie's]. Backups are set in 1 gallon dwc pails and flowered early [2-3 weeks] after the primaries are established w/ no problems. With so many beans piled up, the plan ahead is to run through a good amount of fems and stock as much variety in the cupboard as possible.

I know some folks have dropped Sour Tangie and other beans for the first time recently - so.....what's in your garden in 2014?

nice!..i was just gonna start a thread because i'm opening up a "mom's room" for the first time..i received my new timer and heat mat to start cloning..i've been growing for 2 years..i have buddha blue cheese and candyland in the garden plus my old standby..chem4:wink:

what do you use for light? can i stick with a T5?..i don't want the heat with an MH..any tips, tricks would be awesome!

So, using t5s for moms, right? Because you can sure use them for clones, I would just keep them substantially farther from the bulbs before they are rooted. You can use t5s well for mother plants, since plants generally stretch more slowly (for me at least) under t5 lights than MH lights (probably due to proximity to the lights and lower heat) it will take a little longer for the branches to grow, but I LOVE t5s and use them for all vegetation. The nice things about MH is that you can light a much larger area more effectively with one MH bulb, but in my experience you just get overall better growth by using t5s and consistently regulating their height. My mom's get pretty big, but generally with all the cloning and cutting I can grow at least 4-6 per 4 bulb 4' t5.

Healthy moms === healthy clones === healthy flowering gals;

Keep your moms healthy, do not over or underfeed, and make sure you are getting a good amount of light to the entirety of the plant, not just the top canopy. As with all vegetative plants, regular neeming will be your best friend in the world; it has many benefits beyond the pest related ones, although those alone would merit its usage. I always spray with neem and a very light N dose the day before I cut clones. You want to make sure that your moms do not become rootbound, if you are using soil, soilless, or coco, I would definitely recommend smart pots or air pots. Clones cut from a rootbound plant will have a longer strike time and lower strike rate. When you are cutting clones off a mom, make sure you cut them above a node that has an apical tip, as this will enable the branch to continue to producing new clone sites. If you are using hydro, I could probably help with other more specific questions regarding mother plant maintenance.

thank you!..i'm in FF/FF nutes..i'm pretty advanced even though i havent had a mom or cloned..i LST..should i LST the moms?

LST or mainlining can both be great with moms, as this will open up the plant more to allow for more light for more branches, and will seriously increase both the amount of clone sites and the health of the individual shoots, as they will be receiving more light on their growing tips. If I have a plant that doesn't branch that much on its own, I will train the main stem in an upside-down U shape, usually bringing the main stem around halfway back down. This will explode the growth of the other branches. I don't bend the stem sharply, but rather try to get the largest curve I can get given stem length and size of pot.

to return to the subject of the original post, I too am actually doing my yearly weeding through of strains to prepare for the new starts. As far as what's going to happen for me in 2014, here's what I know so far.

Just started:
11 Dank Zappa (UW Hashplant x Deadly G) Bodhi seeds
11 Purp Urk x Yo Mama Bodhi Seeds

Next up:
Liquor Nepal (Goji OG x Polar Dawg) Seeduction Seeds
ACE regular mix (I have 36 total to run through, looking for some unique landracey things for breeding)
Sour Nightmare (I ran 6 of these total and had great results, and have 9 more to go through) Sin City Seeds
Appalachian Thunderfuck Bodhi seeds

At some point:
LA Confidential x Skunk91 my take on afghani/skunk using a very branchy and extremely roadkill Skunk91 male and a speedy dark and ultra frosty LA Confidential female
Skunk91 f2 (Chem 91 jb x RKS from Bodhi seeds) using extremely raunchy roadkill phenos for both parents

Im in the same situation. I have a Fire Alien Kush that ive had for 4 years that has super bag appeal, hashy taste with cherry undertones and so potent some say its to potent. I personally dont enjoy it much though anymore especially when its the only thing i have to smoke. I have 10 "mother" spots and think its time to move on to something a little more personally enjoyable. So hard to get rid of though...

damn..i wouldn't mind that roadkill skunk:wink:

Goddamn that is an awesome looking run. Only thing in my list is to run a few more white lotus this year. Working on some bag seed right now which I'm going for fire as it came from a fire bag. I just clone clones, I don't maintain mothers. Clones of clones is easier to maintain a strain or "mother" than some giant bush. I do want a giant bush, just no space to do so

That's the thing: you spend so much time with 'em and love on 'em, and when you find that prom queen [or two] that suits you just right, you can't just let 'em go....but then how much of that smoke - ANY one smoke - can you keep burning? This time last year I wanted 4 good varieties in the cupboard: a daybreaker, a nooner thru daytime, an evening kickbacker, and a nightcap. This year I want 8 - two of each to rotate every other day. Yeah, I know - I'm spoiled. I haven't forgotten the days of giving some cash to a friend who knew a guy and then hoping for the best. This is better. :bigjoint:

This is a link to where I say everything I could possibly have to say about cloning.

I tried to make enough f2s so that I could have enough for myself, to send in as freebies somewhere after testing, the original plan was to send them to tsd, as that is where the original skunk91 drop was, but that is clearly not happening now. There also might not be enough as this plant is finicky indoors and might not give me enough to send in, she seems very sensitive to both nutrients and temperature, which is not surprising given that when Bodhi acquired the seeds they had been grown exclusively outdoors for upwards of 12 filial generations. If not, I am going to have a ton of my LA Confidential x Skunk91, as the LA has a very classic afghani bud density, powerfully hungry, and is incredibly stable, which is why I am hoping it will pair well with the Skunk91, all phenos of which are fairly stretchy and high yielding, but a little lacking in 'bag appeal' and definitely could be more indoor friendly. Does anyone know a place where friendly folk can contribute freebies? If all else fails, I'll have them distributed by one of the recreational shops in CO that has decent enough products.

I don't know if I'll update this thread regularly, but everyone shows off baby pictures, right? One week since above cube, The melon gum is in the lead, w/ somango and cheese dom looking very happy. Two backups are also doing fine, the kolossus and pineapple skunk, while the Emerald Jack has struggled to lose it's shell. The top container has two Goji OG clones about two weeks away from the bloom room; the lower container is a couple of GHS exodus cheese left over from being backups to the other bloom room. Will likely place this in a corner of one of the bloom rooms if a sage n sour ever finishes.

I'm less than month away from my first harvest of Timewreck.
All four girls are looking frosty and unique.

Good luck with your new babies.

I LOVED Timewreck and bet you will also. Kept one over a year...she had it all...frost galore w/ good pain relief and a rather soaring initial high...real old school buzz - great producer and practically grew itself. It hurts to move on, but there's a lot of pretty girls out there...I have to spread myself around. :bigjoint:

11 days from cube, and all well and on schedule to be ready for the flower tent when the last of Ripped Bubba and Chernobyl are done. The 3 little girls on the left are the back ups, and 2 - Humboldt Se-eds Pineapple Skunk and Sannie's Kolossus are the ones that grab the eye. I'm getting a crush on the PS, and thinking about a way to get her in w/ the main run. The Kolossus, however, will likely be culled, and I hate when that happens, but I've got jars of it in the pantry. The other back-up, Emerald Jack, started slow but has got her legs. The targets are on the right, Somango, Melon Gum, and Cheese Dom all coming along just fine. They're surrounded by Goji clones [finally] on the left, and a GHS Exodus cheese on the right, which was a backup bean for a Lemon OG that'll get lollipopped and flowered in a day or so. So here's the new girls, and the flower tent where the bubbas and chernobyls are at day 29.

BTW - if anyone wants to piggyback their new beans/run for 2014 [Tangie, anyone?], feel free to come aboard and post your pics.

I'm still rocking my old Bodhi gals. I've got twice Sunshine Daydreams I've decided to keep (I just can't decide! Both are so lovely). Blueberry Hill which is an awesome gal of bountiful harvests, Goji gal which is my very berry OG, but I'm right now flowering out 4 Superstitions, which I will pick a winner from.

I have three bag beans from an awesome sack of IranianG13(Dr. Greenthumb), hoping that it was selfed but I don't know the babys daddy but every bean is a new adventure.

I have some White Lotus I plan on popping again. I had 4/4 males which was a first.

This year will be more Bodhi adventures but I am also looking for some heavy indicas, probably from Cannabiogen, really want a restock of PCK. Should be a good year for cannabis growing on my end.

Ahh, the moms lol...I got an awesome pheno of Delicious seeds Critical Sensi Star, that I've run for about 3 cycles, and she's awesome so keeping her...Thought about RP Kandy Kush to run along side, but worried about stretch, and flowering time, so looking on to something else. I just popped and sprouted 3 Bodhi Sunshine Daydream, I got one awesome looking pheno clone of Lucky Charms for a potential mother, and I sprouted a DNA Sharksbreath, a BC Bud Depot Girl Scout Cookies, and Dinafem's Dinachem...Hopefully between all those I can find at least one or two good moms!

Clankie, if you're ever looking to donate.....;)

are you in CO? i wouldnt be comfortable until i've tested 'em out a bit, but i am an advocate of sharing the wealth.

An update if anyone is following along, or just a pseudo journal for myself...:)...never really documented a run, but am really liking what's been going on w/ this project. The cold temps have slowed down the veg of the newbies somewhat. The emerald jack and pineapple skunk were discarded for being slackers, and am now focused on Somango [ which is out of view on the right ], Cheese Dom [botton L] and Dr Melon Gum [top on L] which are all doing excellent. Just typing those names makes my taste buds drip....lol.

The chop of the Chernobyl is done, but the Ripped Bubbas are taking forever. 2 pairs of trimmers are gooey sticky messes...smoked one last night and thought that bowl would never go out. Anyway, got some real cool purpling, and decided to make a colorful table arrangement.

What are some of the main benefits of neem oil; I only know it as a pesticide? What kind of setup do you keep your headstash moms in? I just took cuttings this grow to start mothers and made a home depot ebb n flo with the 27 gallon tough tote and 2x3 cement mixing tub. They are in 6" rw cubes flooding 4 times a day for 15 min with DG grow/protekt.

also... this year I will be exploring sannies and eskobar. Have extrema, jack, and mad scientist x jackberry in week 4 now.
