I don't know about those studies, but I can verify that "green wood" puts more soot in my chimeny than seasoned fire wood. This also depends on the type of tree. Ash works well for a green wood, while willow doesn't. The time of year that the tree is cut also factors in. In winter the sap is in the roots.
