grow tent newbie

hi I a newbie on forum and I just looking for some advice. I'm an experienced grower but been out of the game for a while. I'm just in the middle of setting up a tent for the first time. its a 4x4 greenroom with a 4 x autopot system with a 600w lumatek digital lamp. I was planning to use Canna coco medium & B-cuzz coco feeds as they have never let me down before. I have a couple of questions on ventilation I would really apprieciate addvice on.
Q1. do I require 2 fans, intake & exhurst as you would in a traditional grow room.
Q2. what size of fans 5'' or 6''.
i would also apprieciate any other advice on growing in tents. in the past i have used the super crop method and plan to do the same any thoughts ?
looking forward to hearing from you guys and cant wait to get my babes growing

You can have 4" in and 5 or 6" out, or you can go with passive intake, I believe if you have 6" out, you need 12" in with no fan

You probably won't need an intake fan unless your inline fan is struggling for some reason or you are running your intake through a long distance of ducting. I prefer to just have passive intake through ducts at the bottom of the tent; or during veg, I just open up the flaps at the bottom.

A 6" inline will probably be what you'll want as that is what most air cooled hoods or cool tubes are designed for (5" is not a standard duct size).

thanks for that. but I would like to bring intake through a ducting from outside the room where the tent is located. I plan to get intake air direct from the outside and exhurst outside. would using 4'' passive intake with 6'' inline fan throught carbon filter exhurst work ?

Yeah that should work. But be prepared to add a booster fan to your intake ducting if the distance is far enough and your inline fan inside the tent struggles to pull enough air through your filter.


Generally the main points with efficient tents setups are:

You let your inline fan attached to your carbon filter inside your tent do a bulk of the work pulling air through your carbon filter and pushing it to exhaust as opposed to trying to push air into the tent... because you want negative pressure inside your tent for odor control (don't boost your tent intake to be greater than what you are exhausting).

Place your inline fan before your air cooled hood (as opposed to pulling through both the filter and hood) but after your carbon filter, that will give you positive pressure through the hood while maintaining negative pressure in the tent, also important for odor control and keeps your inline fan and hood clean.

I like to attach the filter directly to the inline fan but it's fine to use a section of flexible ducting if you need to separate them to fit your space/setup.

The more bends in your ducting the greater the loss of efficiency. The greater the distance of ducting the greater the loss of efficiency.

Hang your filter at the very top of the tent (to pull out rising warm air), have intake air come in at the bottom of the tent.


Visually an efficient airflow setup is like this:

thanks for that Sablezen. I will have a very short intake 1.5m from outside to tent, but I have a 4'' inline fan that I can use if required. my exhurst duct will exit the top of tent and go directly through room ceiling into loft & the exit loft with a roof exit soil & vent pipe.
what temperature do you keep your tent during lights off ?

Well I live in a tropical'ish region and run lights at night and off in the day and there's probably only a 5 degree difference between lights on or off on average. Max of 80F when lights on, directly at canopy/directly under the light, unshaded reading (at hottest point)... and maybe 74F-ish lights off). Reservoir temps are usually a hair over 70F... Central AC keeps the temps pretty flat overall but since I run a small portable in the same room when lights are on as needed there's really not much deviation. It's probably not the most ideal but I have to make do with the heat here.
