I am new to growing, ummmm tomatoes, but I do know a little about growing orchids and other specialty plants. Orchids are generally grown in medium that will drain too fast for your plants. If I were you, I would make your own by using organic(no nute) potting soil, then mix perilite, vermiculite, turface, etc. to help loosen it up.

FYI - Turface is an excellent soil conditioner. Cheap, porous, etc. 50lb bag was about 8 bucks. They use it on baseball fields and readily available. I plan on substituting it in place of perilite and/or vermiculite.

I have heard of people using 50% soil, 25% perilite and 25% vermiculite. Good luck!

I use 1part mushroom compost or earthworm castings, 1part schultz perlite, and 1part peat moss not mg, I add 1 tablespoon of dolomite lime per gallon of soil for pH buffering and calcium and magnesium. It's pretty much promix, I add a little more perlite to the mix too, but that's just personal preference. It has no nutes and you can start seeds in it no problem. And go with water soluble fertilizer so you can flush well.

Does it have an NPK value? For some reason I am inclined to believe that orchid-specific plant products are highly acidic and lean more towards bloom in terms of nutrient ratios.

You could make your own soil fairly easily.

I've heard good things about that company... How bad is the shipping for bags upon bags of soil?

I dont remember the shipping, if it were a lot I prob would have remembered the cost. And HTG is a good company, Ive bought from them several times, even their ebay store a few times. Im only 2 days from them UPS ground so the wait isnt bad at all and Ive been very happy with all my purchases. I highly recommend them

Foxfarm is a good choice. I supplemented my holes with 1 bag of Ocean Forest, some Baicor Soil Stimulator, seabird guano, and earthworm castings.

If you're concerned at all with having an organic crop you should put in the time and money to make sure everything you give your plants is totally organic and safe. It WILL make a difference in the finished product.

but can i use it with some compost and soil? NOT time release soil like MG.
Do you know what promix is? The mix I gave you has no time release nutes. It is nothing like Miracle grow!! It is tried and true, I've used it for 5 months now, there is no reason to pay 25 bucks for a bag of soil and double that when ordering online, when you can make 30 to 40 gallons for the same price!

I agree, you can achieve great results with cheaper soils. But I use what I want because I have no monetary limitations.

johndoe11....nice rides. I use to have a camaro like that in highschool. Heres my baby, too many modifications to list. I will say I beat busa's at the track all day, not only because I run low 9's but because most busa owners are squids and dont know how to drag race.

Thanks man, actually that pic is from several months ago. Not long after that pic was taken, I got side swipped at 45mph on the highway by a drunk driver. The frame sliders saved my bike. Some dont like them looks wise but I look at frame sliders as crash insurance. Cause it doesnt matter how good you are on a bike, someone else will hit you one day. I wear all my gear when I ride and thats how I walked away from this one without a scratch. The bike is back and Im ridin again
