I have narrowed down my choices to the following list. I would like help in choosing 5 strains you feel would be the highest-yielding indoors and the most popular. I am looking for high-yielding "anchor strains" that are popular with everyone.

Granddaddy Purple
Green Crack
Blue Dream
Sour Diesel
Super Lemon Haze
OG Kush
Purps
Cherry Pie
Girl Scout Cookies
Purple Kush
Strawberry Cough
Jack Herer
Big Laughing
Mekong
Dr. Grinspoon
Super Silver Haze
Hash Plant
Chem Dog
Loud Scout
Mazar
Pot of Gold

Half the fun of this "hobby" of ours is the discovery. Just pick 5 and go with it. There are so many good strains out there. My plan is to grow, at least, one or two new strains with every grow.

Some of the strains you have listed are quite different from each other.
Some are more indica dominant, some more sativa dominant.
If you are growing for personal use, do some research about the type of high each one delivers.
With that info, you can narrow it down to what you would like best. Then you can refine your options down even more by looking into characteristics such as yield, grow time, resistance to noobs, (easy to grow) etc.
We all have different tastes in what we are looking for from our medicine, choose which is best for you.

Specifically this :-) Couldn't put it better. If you take the approach of "what should I grow" then it sounds like you have no long term ambition of growing. Pick 5, whatever you don't pick, if they still appeal to you, then grow those next time :-)

Alot of those are very different in their characteristics. As stated above, it is all about discovery. But if you insist on seeking advice, let us know what exactly are you looking for, whether it be for personal or other. Couch lock or heady high? Get my drift..?

I don't have experience with those strains but I have heard GDP, Blue Dream, and Jack Herer are good yielding strains and are also very popular.

Being a new grower you may want to consider the Indica-dom plants as they are a bit easier to grow and are typically very forgiving of newbie-mistakes.....and you WILL make all the newbie mistakes.

I would consider marijuana as medicine.
It chemically effects our minds and bodies to relieve various disorders, whether you have a script for it or not.
Even if we use it recreationally, it still causes us to relieve us of stress, anxiety, depression, or any other form of 'disorder' that we want to suppress.
It is considered a drug, right? Drugs are medicine.

.Tell that to the Feds!

All kidding aside, marijuana is a herb
and not all herbs are/used as or medicine.

"An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties."

Cannabis is an annual, dioecious, flowering herb.

Some herbs are also used for culinary applications, beverages, perfumes etc....
I still don't see where the OP said anything about "medical" nor "MMJ".

pick a few strains, and see which one best suits your needs. but know that not all strains are ment to be grown the same (veg length for example to get a decent yeild). But also how the strains react to the same feeding, and light schedule. some strains take longer to flower then others, indica dominant strains usually 8-9weeks flower time. Sativas however have longer flowering periods, I've grown a strain that flowered for 14 weeks once. wasnt worth the effort and time.

Some use it for spiritual, medicinal etc...
I use it to get blasted, toasted, fried, obliterated,
stoned, high, baked, cooked, and ripped.
