i follow a lot of formula 1 racing, and being mostly a british based sport, i have quite a few brit friends on facebook, and they'll all pretty much freaking out over subway's recent decision to cave to islamic demands and go to an all halal diet, which means no more pork products..
that;s right, 185 subways in the uk will no longer be selling bacon or ham for their hoagies, after an onslaught of complaints from muslim customers.. from the british people i have talked to, none of them seem happy about this decision at all..
here's a link for the story..

This will probably last for a week or so before going back to pork products due to the unusual fall in demand and profits.

Before jumping to conclusions, perhaps the demographic needs to be analyzed more carefully?
Who are the majority of customers of Subway? And what do they order?
I certainly don't know this. Is it possible Subway knows this? Are there competitors?

Apparently Subway UK seems to think 185 out of >1500 stores need to cater to self-imposed limits of relijimus nuttery.
This is nothing more than an attempt to capitalize on the demographic. It's not a sweeping rush to convert Brits to bending over for Allah.

idk why subway would attempt such a thing though, why not let halah followers open up their own stores, much in the way that jewish people do with kosher delis?

Government should force all restaurants to go Halah, after all, who is going to pay the reparations after all those years of us abandoning our poor cousins in the middle east, surely this is the fault of us, not them.

Hello??? (knock knock knock) McFly???
Allow me to put it this way.
You have weed to sell. Your general clientele is already saturated, so you can't seem to squeeze them for anymore coin. Then there are all these other people who don't like your weed because it doesn't come with seeds. (I know, crazy but WTF)
Well, if you know you can't sell any extra to your normal consumer base, why not move some production into seeded product, JACK up the prices to cater to that peculiar demand, and keep on rolling in extra profits as you have now expanded your consumer base laterally.

The profit margins get squeezed tighter and tighter with every new franchise. This "change" allows for expansion without the negative effects of saturation.

At the same time, how is it in your best interest (as a corporation) to not capitalize on this untapped market?

hello, mcfly, look at the reaction to this from the none muslim, british crowd.. the people i was talking to, every single one of the basically said eff subway, they'll never give them a penny of their money, ever.
yeah, they might be gaining a few dollars from the muslims, but at the same time they're going to be losing huge amounts of money from the rest of the uk crowd, you know, the one's that are extremely pissed off about this..
but go and and tell me how a few muslims are now going to make up for the loss of the majorities money, mcfly..

that's exactly what i said too bnb, you don't like bacon or ham, cool, don't eat it, but don't give me crap or take away my options to eat it.. ummm, bacon, lol..
I can't believe that subway did this. British folks love ham and bacon. I know there are a lot of Muslim immigrants in the UK, but I got a feeling the native population will react poorly to their bacon being taken away.

I wouldn't go into a sub shop that didn't offer a nice pile of bacon to top my sandwich with.

Let's just see what happens. I am sure they factored that into the risk strategy.
If the median British patron is that pissed, then it will have an effect--which would lead to a whole set of other issues with the UK. Your sample pool tells little beyond its anecdotal value. How much do these people complaining spend on average at Subway per annum? How many of the 13482 "patriots" on that petition matter in the first place? How many muslim patrons will now go there? How many "curious" non-muslims will be attracted. Will that net change be >14k ?

The calculus on this matter is not simple by any stretch of the imagination. So to come to conclusions based on xenophobia alone is rather blindered, to say the least. And keep the numbers in mind here; 185/1500 = <12.3% of all franchises. I imagine these subways are already located in areas of higher muslim density, anyway. 2011 stat on muslim population in the UK was 2.7Mn. Yah...I can see how 14000 xenophobes are worth giving up a potential customer pool of 2Mn+

Subways in my local area are constantly trying to cater to ethnic tastes. A recent "experiment" was Butter Chicken (due to the high level of Indians in my neck of the woods). That flopped... oh well, on to the next idea.

If this shit flops, big deal...they'll just go back to business as usual. I see it for what it is, though, not some abstraction into the realm of "personal freedoms" and Jihad. What are YOU trying to imply by bringing this story to the forefront, eh? You're not co-authoring Kynes' manifesto of "multi kulti", I hope.
