The Democrats in the south wanted everyone to have a Negro chattel slave.

Mutually exclusive.

The war, however, was fought over a states right to secede, and other states rights issues.

Without slavery the civil war we know wouldn't have happened.

But it is a vast oversimplification to say the civil war was about slavery.
