Hey all, your resident knucklehead Hiram, here with yet another question. Suprised? Yeah i didnt think so haha...anyhoo, backyard bucket grow problems, using MG 3mo Release (yikes) Bagseed (even more YIKES) 5gal buckets, 14hrs of daylight, sprout broke soil 33 days ago and only 3 are doing fair. They are only 8-9" above soil but a nice shade of green and they have fans that increase by the node (sign of health no?) Then there are the other 6 :( tiny and sickly...i started them in cups for like a week, once they showed their first jagged leaves i transplanted them into 5gal buckets w/ drainage. 3 grew, 5 never grew bigger than 2" and the last stayed 3 1/2". I did more research and realized how bad the soil situation was..i bought gardening soil NOT potting soil which was FILLED with WOODCHIPS so i thought fast and came up with a way to sift 95% of the wood chips and alot of the nute pellets out creating a LIGHT, AIRY, CLEANER, FLUFFY soil mix and retained all my perlite as well. I transplanted all into smaller containers because their root growth was puney. I figured the very coarse soil and huge container wasnt fit, so i put them in cups with the good soil until the roots fill them out. Now, my question to you folks is, Are the tiny ones worth the effort or should i chunk em? Also, what say you about the small brown dots on leaves in picture? Finally what should i do about healthy ones in woodchippy soil?

Id save the tiny ones, they may have been stunted or shocked but hopefully they will recover for you :) Also, whats worked for me in the past for seedlings is using those red solo cups to start in. Leave them till they have a few nodes, and by then you can cut the cup away or just pop them out and put them in a larger container. I go from solo cup to 5gal containers personally. Just be sure to cut good drainage holes in the bottom of your solos!

While im not 100% sure on the brown dots, I wouldnt worry too much if they dont get worse. Could have been water magnifying light and burning the leaves, or it could have been a bug stopping by. Either way, if it doesnt seem like a huge issue for your plant I wouldnt sweat it too much.

Your healthy ones... If they are doing good, and you think they will continue to do so with the soil they are in, leave them. If you feel that it wont do well for them later on in life, you could always try to pick them up and gently knock the soil loose around their rootball. Just get as much as you can away without doing damage, then put them in some better soil you have prepared.

Also, just a random note, the plants could just be slow growers. Bagseed is a gamble, could be great but it could also be not so great. Seeds could have been damaged, old, exposed to things they shouldnt have been, ect. Always try to go with the best seeds you can, as those will give you the best growth in most cases!

Goodluck to you!

Thx for responding ! And great advice!! But, the thing is, the roots are really not forming a ball, they are growing sporadically here and there and i think its because of the woodchips but still they look happy

Hah, give them time :) they may be slow to grow, but whats the hurry? If you want something faster just start some more and put your slow girls off to the side and let them do their thing!
