It seems now that Israel has another problem besides Hamas. The UN Human Rights Council is starting an investigation as to whether war crimes were committed by Israel in Gaza. One central question will be why there were so many civilian causalities suffered by the Palestinians. The body count, as it stands today is over 2100 Palestinians killed, mostly civilians supposedly, while the Israelis suffered 72 causalities, 6 of which were civilians. Thousands of buildings were destroyed, leaving tens of thousands persons homeless. This is not the 1st time Israel has faced charges that it used unreasonable force, as it faced the same charges in 2009 as a result of their attack on Gaza then. That investigation concluded there was strong evidence that war crimes were committed by both Israel and Hamas. Israel by deliberately or recklessly targeting civilians, and Hamas by firing rockets indiscriminately at Israeli cities. This time Israel is really worried though at the thought of international sanctions being imposed, which did not happen the last time. The main issue will be the principle of proportionality, which is actually a judgment call as to whether excessive force was used. Israel is prepared to use 2 main arguments. One being that not all the dead were civilians, only half were and the other being that Hamas purposely placed their rockets in schools, mosques and other sensitive areas, such as hospitals. Unlike last time though, Israel will not boycott this investigation, and has brought in legal and military experts to aid in it's defense. One argument they intend to use is that they are being singled out by biased international bodies, and if the same standards were used for everyone, then Russia should be sanctioned for it's actions in the Ukraine, and the US for it's actions in Iraq, so why is Israel being singled out, anti-Semitism? They really said that. One other problem facing Israel this time is that the Palestinians are threating to apply for membership to the International Criminal Court in order to press formal charges on their own against Israel if the UN doesn't set a timeline for the withdrawal of Israel from the occupied lands. That should go nowhere with the veto power of the US, so expect an application to the ICC by Palestine, which Israel is sure to love. Anyway, we will see in a month if the State of Palestine gets anywhere in the UN, and the war crime report is expected to be released in March 2015. Shalom.
