LED Light Catch Fire

Hey guys I was just wondering if the fans in a 300watt light stop working suddenly and the light stays on will it catch fire or will the light burn out first. I ha e 8 300watt leds and one of them today when I was looking at the ladies was really hot and I noticed the fans weren't working at all so I unplugged it. I'm not always home so if it happens again to another light and I don't notice it right away will I have a fire problem. Also the light that I unplugged that was real hot was on for 6 hours before I noticed it .

I believe they can get hot enough. I'd be more worried about cheap Chinese imports. They're often driven at higher current and cut corners with bad wiring, potential shorts, etc. I can imagine them not using a thermocoupler to sense dangerous temperatures and break the circuit. For example, California Lightworks isn't a Chinese import but has a negative reputation for driving their lights hot (among other things). I've seen more than one complaint that it shuts down too much due to high temps (a thermocoupler doing its job on a light that's driven too hard/hot.).

If I were you I'd post in the indoor>led forum. There are many experts there who may not follow these other (general) forums. @Hgrow is one who often posts about the risks of Chinese lights.

What is your light? I'd be less concerned with something like a TopLED which drives their lights at less than 50% capacity than another light (like CLW) that runs them over 70%. I'd be worried about a cheaper light driven like that but without the protections CLW apparently has.

The heat may cause a short which could lead to a fire but I don't think the LEDs will ever get hot enough to spontaneously combust.

Are those light UL certified? Even some of the Chinese imports are now.

As said above, the heat itself shouldn't be enough to cause issues, a short or loose wiring could. I'd pull the case off the one you unplugged and snap a pic, I can help you a little more if I can see what you are dealing with.

I pulled it apart and the clips that clip the power to the fans was unplugged. The bitch got real hot cause the 3 boxes that power the leds were all a little melted on the sides. Everything works well now. Thanks guys

With China's reputation for counterfeit products it's no surprise there are reports of fake UL stickers.(<<link). I wonder how many people check the veracity of a sticker. The guy in the link sent numerous emails to UL and it still took 6 months for them to complete an investigation.

If it's a rebranded Chinese import like Blackstar, I'd be comfortable that any UL listing is legit because the light is sold by a US entity. But, lights that are drop-shipped from China (TopLED, many on eBay), I wouldn't make the same assumptions about.

Very good point on that front.
