Ok iv been trolling the threads for vert.

Read a little lotta bit and seen some impressive grows using vert.

My main question is are the yields higher then in a normal non vert set-up?

My plants are young and been thinkin after seeing the vert grows switching to vert here in a little bit to see how it goes.

The 400 watt I have in a 3x3x6 is rated for vert and I am thinking that going bare bulb I could use more of the area in the tent rather then filling the bottom. As I have 8 plants in this tent.

Curious and really wanna switch but wanna know more specifics before I do.

Thoughts?

The main thing is to make sure you can suck the heat out of the room. But in essence thats really the only thing. With a 400 watt light you will want to keep your plants about 15-18" away. Remove as much metal from the tent as possible, ie fan, hood, ducting. Suck air from the top of the tent. A fan under the light will also help with this.

yield per plant is still about the same per given light source and root pot... the higher output of vert growing, is that each light that is vertical offers space for more plants to utilize the light. So while yield per plant is about the same, you can put twice as many plants per light.

I did spend sometime reading about vertical but no one really stated anything about yields and such. That is why I asked about it.

It makes sense. I hear light is more intense and you can utilize more of your grow area. Makes sense.

Just grow your plants straight up beside the bulb, which you'll hang vertical straight down. Level with the bulb is where the most light intensity is, and it diminishes rapidly both up and down, leading to lots of people running two bulbs.

Arrange your plants in a circle and let them grow. Don't let anything grow closer than 6" from your 400W, bigger lamps will want more space. This is for heat but also shading reasons.

Place a fan in our near the middle of your circle blowing straight up PAST the bulb, not AT the bulb. This will encourage natural convection and carry heat away while encouraging drag cool air to come in from beneath to replace it, chimney style.

Substrates don't matter, the usual comparisons apply. Sealed vs vented rooms is a personal choice, the critical thing is that you maintain full control over your environment whichever you use.

It's generally accepted that cooltubes are a net loss- that the heat they remove isn't worth the light loss of putting lamps inside them. This mirrors my experience with sealed and vented designs.

Go for it. Trim stuff as it grows so the plants aren't too dense. If they get really tall above the bulb, top them. You won't need as many budding sites as you think.

I have many grows under my belt but never a vert. I have already switched everything over and like the way the setup looks already. Gonna watch the temps for a little while and see what they do but they have been staying around 80 so far. I only have a small fan under the bulb at the moment but I will be getting a larger one if needed once I find out what they temps are going to do.

On another website it was the general consensus that the smaller fans on low power were more effective than a beefier fan blowing faster.

The thought is that a slower, gently rising column of air is preferred over a fan blowing hot air all around the space. Gently rising hot air can be exhausted quickly whereas hot air blowing around the space will not make its exit as efficiently.

That makes sense. I have been checking temps and with the setup now. The tent is actually running cooler then it was with the wing. So the vert actually brought down the temps instead of raising them. So far anyways. Will see when the plants fill out more of the area.

The fan I am using is directly below the bulb and is only a 2 speed 4" clip on desk fan. Seems to be working alright. And I did set it up to blow by and now on the bulb so the air flows straight up to the exhaust fan.

I will stick with what I have until there run into a problem. Gotta setup man cam here soon so I can watch 24/7 from anywhere.

Ya i know. I have read so many posts about people having problems with cooling vert. Then again my plants are small and not eating up real estate as of yet. When they do then I will see temps go up I am sure. But as I said my temps dropped once I removed the hood reflector. I could see how a cool-tube might be needed for a 1k but 400 not so much. Or if people want there plants even closer to the light when they grow up. lol But in a 3x3 so far everything is looking good. Plants are growing and the temps are under control. I may even have to decrease the fan speed once the temps drop outside.

I also added a 4' 2 bulb fixture to the mix o shed a little more light on the little girls until they get larger. Temps stayed the same.

Ill have to post some new pics in the other post that I have been updating.

Since we're using the vertical nature of the cylinder as a chimney, it doesn't need much extra encouragement. I do run a big 20" box fan at the bottom of my silo- but it's set on low speed as well. It does a nice job of creating a wide but gentle breeze, both for plants and moving the air column.

Reflective materials at the end of the cylinder are helpful, but only to a point; the bottom doesn't help much because plants aren't looking for light from underneath. Top reflectors work great but need to be carefully placed so as not to cap excess heat inside.
