I'm 28 days into flowering can I trim anything off without hurting or affecting the plants to help light get through to lower buds?

You can trim almost all your leaves off and the plant will survive. How much is too much? That's the argument. No plant is really "damaged" by removing a leaf or two, but you may consider alternatives like LST or just trimming the lower, tiny buds/branches to direct energy to the ones that are going to be your large buds. Take into account the size of what you're working with and go from there.

Low Stress Training. Bending branches horizontally to maximize canopy and control height/space. I do this with my mother plants pretty hardcore. I top them a couple times then let them get really tall while trimming all the lower new foliage. Then I horizontally bend all of the main branches and tie them down with string or pipe cleaners. Then all of the new foliage grows in the middle creating a huge even canopy of tops. Then everytime I cut a clone, 2 more sprout and the mother plant just continuously grows like one big bush.
