Impulse buy or great value - 200w LED for $250?

Main questions:
- Impulse buy?
- Will veg only light work for flowering?

My circumstances are different than some. I'm looking to start growing again, indoor this time... I won't be growing from a tent, closet, hidden doorway, garage, empty room, etc. I live with a few roommates in their mid-twenties. My fiance doesn't favor that I smoke occasionally. let alone have a passion for growing. Just this week I trolled online for PC Grow Box Plans. I decided to purchase everything I needed and just run with it.

Today, I recently called around on several local hydroponic stores, after about the 5th store they told me they had a discontinued 200w LED (California Light Works Solar Flare - Veg Master) for sale. "How much?"

$250... SOLD!

So I purchased the light without really researching if I can use this veg light for flowering too. The light is not full cycle (full spectrum). What will the downside be of me using this veg only light for flowering? Will it reduce my yield significantly, will the plant die, will it stay in veg despite going from 18/6 to 12/12?

Let me know what your thoughts might be on this light (it fits my pc case box perfectly). I want to know if it was a good deal. But also, shall I add more lights to help flowering once the plants hit that time? Any shared info will be well approached.

naw you're cool, don't worry about it, I know very good growers who stick with mh all the way through, and clw vegmaster is about like a mh

I was under the impression that Metal Halide has more full spectrum than LED. I looked at the veg charts for this light and it doesn't look to promising. What's the worst this that could happen?

that's what I was thinking, I figure, in a pc, if it fits perfectly, it's a perfect fit, no matter what it is

Yes, the light is 9" x 9" x 4".

My full tower pc case is 9.25". The light won't be hanging. I've conceptualized a system that allows me to move the light up and down. This particular LED is quiet which is nice.

Most mid sized towers are 7-8" wide.

You don't think the lack of spectrum will screw with the plant's ability to grow and mature at a decent rate? I was hoping for an educated answer. I can't really find much material online regarding this issue. Any resources to be shared that answers this dilemma?

If you have good intensity it may overcome some of the "lack" of spectrum......but the VegMaster might as well be a flowering light with that red spike. It just has a fat blue spike as well, so things might not get as stretchy......who knows, reminds me of the 1st gen of R&B lights' spectrum, nothing really in between just a big red and blue spike....

Thanks for the clarity, what chart are you looking at?

This 200w puppy for two lights should be sufficient. I tested it out earlier and it's intense. Wayyyyyy better than the UFO's I was going to purchase. I'm happy I did some research and knew a little bit about what I was getting myself into.

Hmmmm.

I would think that the footprint guideline is more for lack of light, than oversaturation. Oversaturation would be more overheating related topic right? If my heat is right than there shouldn't be a problem? I bet what I'm doing sounds odd. I'm curious to know if anyone has posted anything on too much light, oversaturation, etc.

Just what was on Grower's house....it may be different now

The 200 watter was before the upgrade to Osram chips. They claim:

Features:
  • 40 High Quality 5 watt LED bulbs for 200 watts of intense lighting for your plant canopy
  • A total of 160w actual power draw
  • Color Spectrum Optimized for Vegetation and Bloom: Balanced Blend of Deep Blue, Blue, Deep Red, Red and Warm White
So 160W -3W for fan -23W for drivers leaves 134W of dissipation. The blues might be 35% efficient and the reds 20%, so maybe it is a 25% efficient lamp overall. Based on that I would say it ishould give good results covering 2.5 ft² of flowering room or 18" X 18", that is assuming the spectrum is OK without much white, I cant vouch for that.

In a veg space I think it would cover 8ft² or 2X4' and spectrum would be less of an issue.

As far as value, 134W of dissipation works out to $1.85/W and at 25% efficient that is $7.40/PAR W. For comparison, one of the cheapest grow LED lamps is the Onyx Bloom, $450, 210W dissipation, 30% efficient. It is $2.15/W or 7.14/PAR W.

Not sure how you know all that without actually only one but I don't quite a few of these lamps in your pretty much right on with your data. You can stretch the bloom booster to a true to buy 2 only in the flowering section of the tent everything else is about 18 square at about 20 inches these lips are awesome for smaller plants Banzai grows in screen of green but definitely not for a tall plant . As far as putting it in a PC case I would recommend against it I've had several of these in several different enclosures and they're all way too hot the only time I've seen a lamp trip a thermal cutoff. My experience gave me a 28 to 35 inch minimum overall height for the grow cabinet to pull off the footprint with these lamps. Didn't mean to hijack or impose just some data good luck guys.
