Leaves are "Canoeing" -- Too Much Water?

Hi all,

I'm two weeks into a rubbermaid grow. For some reason the leaves are slightly curling inward. Is this a symptom of overwatering?

Temp 83 degrees, humdity around 30%, I gave them a generous watering two days ago.

I'm using Miracle Grow soil (I know, I know, I shoud have stayed away from it, but I have no idea how to mix my own soil.) It's too late anyway.

I know that when the plants grow large, watering is only needed once a week or so, but what about new sprouts in cups? Should I be watering them more often? The soil seems to go dry every two or three days.

My worm-poo organic fertalizer is supposed to be applied once a week, but does this only apply to larger plants?

is it dry all at da bottom of da cup. cause if not den you water too much. Ya humidity is a little low tho so it would dry out a lil quicker but not in 2days.
U usually get da pointing from light being too close or too much heat. Dey look ite tho u good bra.

Oh and dont feed yet they too young MG already had nutes in it. Start it at da earliest 3-3 1/2wks of age as you already at two. Use at half strength.

I suspect the leave curling is from over-watering, but they are close to the CFL lights. Could that be causing the problem?

Also, the leaves are reaching in an extreme way towards the lights, even though they are only two inches away from the lights, I'm not sure why...

Miracle Grow gets a bad rap but it's not that bad.

Did you poke holes in the bottoms of those cups? The water needs to be able to drain out or your roots will rot. And that ain't good my friend.

Yes, I poked 4 small holes in the sides of the cups. They're very small, how big should they be?

man dat looks like heat stress. I cant put my fuckin finger on dis. You need to make the hole a lil bigger cause sum of ya leaves is starting to curl down like dey gotten too much water.
How many inches do you have dem from da plants cuse ive have em at 1in. max and no probs? You usin da sprial small orange cfl's?

The plants are about three inches below the lights...The temp is about 83 on average. I think I overwatered them two days ago, but I just checked them all again and my moisture meter says they are dry, so I watered them all again just now.

I'm using 8 of the bulbs shown below...

I know plants are watered once a week or so, but how often do you water sprouts?

It seems like the soil in the cups dry-up every two to three days. Maybe my temp and humidity gage isn't working correctly and it's hotter in the grow tub than it should be? That might account for the need to frequently water the sprouts and for the curling leaves?

Could the fan blowing on the sprouts be drying up the soil or causing the leaves to curl?

Question: Is there any way to increase the humidity in my grow tub?

naw da fan would only dry like da top soil. a humidifier or a cup of water and enclose ya box. i water my seedling once a week or a littler longer. It's better to let dem dry out a little bit. You'll know when dey need water.

What I do with my seedlings, which I start in the exact same cups outdoors (unless it's REALLY cold, then they come inside), is keep them on a plastic tray that I put water in. While they're starting I always keep 1/4"-1/2" of water in the tray. This does a couple of things.

First, they never dry out, problematic with seedlings because, unlike more mature plants, they will die easily if allowed to dry out too much.
Second, forces downward root growth to seek the water. This has worked very, very well for me every time. So much so that at times when my more mature plants are canoing from heat stress, the seedlings are happy little campers with their feetses wet. They get transplanted when the cups start blowing over (about 6-8 nodes' worth of growth).

I went through them all. Very cool. What caused the leaf curl in your early sproutlings? Also, what is LST short for? (Sorry for my ignorance here)

The leaf curl was directly caused by high humidity. In trying to protect them from the cool weather I put them in a ghetto greenhouse (a translucent plastic bin turned upside down). Removed the bin from over them, et voila, they straightened out.

No worries on asking, we all have to ask. LST is Low Stress Training. Search my threads for one called Question as LST progresses. You'll find out why it's a good thing, along the lines of doing a ScrOG (screen of green, versus sea of green, a.k.a. SOG).
