Rosetta Stone

So I've got a 5 pack of F2 Rosetta Stone from Magilla. Supposedly this was made from original Bros Grimm stock. I would like to make some seeds from this as I've heard very good things about these genetics, but I'm not sure what the proper way to go about this would be?

Would I be best served doing an open pollination, or just identify the best male and female (assuming I get at least one of each) and go from there?

Any input from you cats that know a thing or two about chucking would be appreciated...

Open pollination. No question, every time if you want to preserve. If you want to lose some of the genetics you do selection. 5 seeds isn't really enough to completely preserve the line unfortunately, but you can maybe get a high % of the genes with some luck. You can always add to the line you created with external sources as well. That's how MJ bred his Sweet Skunk and NL and Blueberry. Collecting packs from different eras and known sources and then working the lines from that entirety.

The number of plants necessary to preserve a line successfully will vary with how homozygous the plant is I should add. But most lines you really wanna run closer to 30 minimum and probably more like a couple hundred just to be on the safe side.

For sure. I have no illusions of "preserving" the line, just wondering what the best way to go about making some seeds would be. Great input though. Thank you

I'd decide on the best male and then pollinate all the females.
That's kinda what I was originally thinking abe... but then again I don't know shit about breeding so I figured I better ask. :eyesmoke:

What were your thoughts on what you saw from them? I'm assuming you liked it considering you made seeds...?

Open pollination would be my choice, it will not cause any bottlenecking. Will not cause as much bottlenecking since there aren't that many seeds, you get the point, cool find nevertheless. Peace

I think I would use pollen from all males to pollenate each female but keep the seeds separated. Like pollenate one half of the females with one male and the other half with the other male or one third with one of three males etc, depending on ratio of male/female. Use a paint brush or qtip to paint the pollen where you want it and presto.

The only thing with open pollination is you don't know what plant's seed you're popping, only know the female it comes out of. If you want to keep clones of the best parent combo it will be hard to know which male you're going to keep with open pollination.

True enough.

If I find a female that really stands out I may hit that with pollen from the male(s) that I find, and then back cross a male or two to the original nice female and see what comes of that.

If nothing stands out from the original 5 then maybe an open pollination of all plants and see what I can find in the F3 seeds.

i like to openpollinate, but keep each female seperate. i prefer to open pollinate then i can do selection from there.
So how would you recommend going about that? Collect pollen from each male, and then dust a branch or two on each female with the various male pollen, and use color coded twist ties or something to denote which branch was dusted by which male?

I definitely can't do this while I'm stoned. I can see me fucking this up big time

no i mix my pollen and hit each fem. u want to pass on as many trait as you can to each fem so hitting them with all possible males is the best way to do this.

Ahh I see. Makes sense.

So if I find a female that stands out would you recommend just hitting that one gal with the male pollen mixture, or should I dust every female no matter what I think of them?

plus when the traits recombine you might get exactly what you want from the undesirable fems, while your fav fem may put out undesirable trait combos.

Right on GG thanks for the info. That's what I'll do then. Are you a proponent of back crossing? Should I take a few males from the F3 generation and hit the best female from the F2's?

Either way I'll get some to you if you want...

depends on the situation. if you can find what you were looking for in the f3s and then the f4s then i wouldnt.. but if it looks like that special lady didnt pass on those special traits, id try to bx. if you end up with all females then you might have to bx depending on the line you decide to outcross to. if the f3 ladies dont give you what u want, hitting the f2 mom with f3 males sounds like a god move.
