finding your pheno!

when looking to start a new mother, and not having access to clones too much...how many beans do you pop in search of the best of that particular strains phenos?

recently I popd around 20 gsc seeds from cc in search of a pheno in that line I used to have...
after vegging for 2 months I took 6 cuttings
of those 6, I've had my eye on one from the beginning...
named her...#6!
6 will go on to be the cookie mother!

I'll be ordering seeds in a couple of months and was wondering in your experience how many it takes to find that one special pheno that outshines the rest?

I would say growing it out to completion would help pick a winner, some can look great and have a fairly mild buzz. Others can look like shit and you smoke it but wooohoo son you go to the moon.

Finding a keeper is all about preference, I have found keepers in freebies before so 1 seed is all it takes.

Like the lottery, you can win a shit ton of money it only takes one ticket. Chances you will find the ticket who the fuck knows.

I think that it really depends on the breeder. I spent $800 at CaliCon and was very disappointed. Germination problems, sensitive plants, and if you were able to grow a plant it would go herm. I couldnt pop a pack and grow it out! I had to pick though and cut most of them down. Majority of them was not able to finish. My GSC appeared to be Durban dom without much smell or potency. TGA was kind of disappointing also.
I am hooked on Rare Dankness right now. I got 6 solid females from Starkiller and all of them were good! One of them was like CaliConn's Jedi, gun powder smell. they have very similar genetics... Looking to buy Scotts OG soon.

I ran 60 regular seeds and found 3 that were very special! I had 40 TGA that I didnt keep 1. I had 1 1/2 packs from RareD and found 2 special plants out of 18 seeds. RareD won the % game for sure.

I didn't wanna bag on TGA or CC again but I have yet to find a keeper out of either of those companies. Although they show off some great buds at the events and on IG... I just haven't found what they did. However others have had success.

I have been through over 100 seeds with TGA, I found decent plants some sucked but nothing phenominal.

i did find what i considered a keeper from ace of spades in a 5er.. rare dankness def gave me what i wanted both times. depending on breeder/genetics it could take anywhere from a pack to 10 packs. a single def can hit a homerun.....

Could you describe the cherry ludens? Was it ind or sat dom? Large or small. Did it clone easy? I had a couple that would not clone
I have been talking too much crap on TGA and just thoght I would have to wait and see.

finding your pheno wow I could write a book on this as it so complicated

I have done this in depth 3 times and it took 4 crops to find the best pheno's

To keep it basic, if you buy 20 seeds you need to grow them, make notes on every plant at diffent stages, tag each plant and take 3 cutting per plant in veg so you know what plant each cutting where taken from

next you need to take notes on how well the cutting root and how long they take

flower the first lot off and keep notes on each plant and how long they take to flower, the yeild and qualty of the buds

I would keep the best plants, say you like 6 plants out the 20

you veg the 6 plants (cutting x 3) 18 plants (tagged) and take 2 cutting off each plant (tagged)

and you give them a crap grow high nutes, cold when lights off, 35c lights on and stress them out a lot and keep notes

if any turn hermie there out and if they can't handle stress there out and keep the strongest plants

after a few more crops you will know what plant is the best one

took me over a year to find a good phoneo before now

It helps to know what traits specifically you're looking for and how many.

So if you see variation in stretch - you can bet that there's at least one base pair that is clearly not homozygous. These pairs can be codominant, recessive or dominant and there is probably some middle ground between those 3 positions too but this is all I am personally aware of. The field of genetics changes quickly. Epigenetics especially has been a huge deal.

Anyway to make a long story short, let's work with just dom/recessive as is typically described. 1/4 should express the recessive if that's what you're looking for, 3/4 should express the dominant. We'll leave codominant traits for F2's as an F1 you should see every plant express the characteristic you're searching for in that situation - at least if it's only related to a single base pair.

Now take this and you're looking for a bunch more traits to attach to the plant - well, you need to see the variation in expression of traits related to the ones you're searching and go through a similar song and dance to get an actual hypothetical number.

Simple example but if you're looking for 4 recessive traits to line up there is only a 1/128 chance it will happen. 5? 1/512. 6? 1/2048 7? 1/8192

As you can see, there's a lot of room for variation. It also depends on how homozygous the parents were. Anyway a lot of hunting can be required and sometimes you can expect to never see the same genotype again depending on the line unless you have many thousands of seeds.

Given the origin of his cookies is basically a mystery, I'd say there's no one who will be able to better answer the question than you or someone else who has grown a reasonable number of them.

wow thanks for that, yea I'm not too impressed with CC... they herm easy and most don't go on to be anything special. there was one pheno that was cookieish...but I'm starting to think it's not worth it..

I also didn't like TGA too much...ran chernobyl and Pandoras box but they were worse than the cc

rareD is sounding good I'll look over they're stock.

I guess after this I'll be sticking mostly with DNA... who's never let me down.

Anyone tried barney's?
I've been meaning to try the laughing Buddha. looks like a sweet sativa.

Save your money on barney farms. I think that it is for people who cant afford the more expensive stuff.

One of my favorite kushes is from Reserva P. Kandy Kush. It is probably the skunkiest plant that I have had. Roadkill type... You got me thinking about it again, I was about to order again and I was on the fence about my last pack to pick.

DNA and Reserva are connected somehow, so they share genetics.

I pop the whole pack, select them during flower you can monster crop clones off flowering plants they come out a lil wonky but this way you can see the bud structure and smell the trics to get a general idea of how the plant gonna be. Good luck on your search!
