Student Loan Debt Now Surpasses Credit Card and Auto Loan Debt

"Student loans have become the second largest source of personal debt in the United States. Aware of growing public concern over the issue, Senate Democrats are making student loans one of their top election year planks and will vote on legislation to allow refinancing at lower rates.

It’s the reason Tiffany Brown, a Queens College graduate, hasn’t moved out of her parents’ home, and the reason she thinks twice about law school.

It’s the biggest obstacle facing Christina Chaise, 24-year-old a graduate student at Columbia’s Teacher's College, in her journey from poverty to self-sufficiency.

Brown and Chaise are typical young college graduates in New York — they have student loan debt that will probably affect their choices for decades.

“It scares me,” said Chaise who owes $20,000 but expects to borrow at least another $20,000 before finishing graduate school.

“I have been pursuing higher education to raise myself out of poverty,” she said. “I grew up in the projects. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I want a better life. I don’t know if I can do everything I want to do, because I have these bills to pay each month.”

Brown, a 25-year-old project coordinator with the New York Public Interest Research Group, had to take out extra loans after her father had a stroke while she was in college.

She said she thinks about her $30,000 in debt whenever she considers any big purchase or life choice.

“It’s impacting my decision whether I want to continue my career,” she said.

Millions of Americans are in the same boat as these New Yorkers. Americans owe $1.2 trillion in student loan debt, a number that has tripled in the last decade. New York State residents hold $60 billion of that debt, and college grads in the state owe on average $27,310 in student loans, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Student loans have passed credit cards and auto loans to become the second biggest source of personal debt in the U.S., trailing only mortgages. Aware of growing public concern over the issue, Senate Democrats are making student loans one of their top election year planks.

They plan a vote next month on legislation offered by Massachusetts DemocratElizabeth Warren that would allow holders of public and private student loans to refinance at lower rates, just as people can refinance home mortgages or car loans.

Brown, who pays an interest rate of 6.8%, could benefit if the bill became law by cutting her interest in half.

“This high amount of student debt is dragging down our economy,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who sponsored a provision in the loan legislation.

Republicans are sure to balk at a provision in the bill that pays for the lost federal revenue from government loans by raising income taxes on those who earn more than a million a year.

But Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Republicans will face stiff political pressure to compromise.

“This issue has amazing resonance,” Schumer said.

He said President Obama will address the staggering loan debt in coming weeks and predicted growing national attention will force GOP leaders to “come to us for some kind of help.”

If Republicans block action on issues like the minimum wage and student debt “their numbers are gonna sink,” Schumer said.

“They are really gonna get hurt.”"

"Go to college!" they said...

"Get an education!" they said..

"It's the key to happiness"...

"Do you want to be poor your whole life?!"...

Well.. welcome to the sad reality...

You lied to us. Take responsibility for it.

I'll respect you more if you admit you failed than if you try to keep up the facade and tell me to believe you over my own eyes.

Those of you that won't should never have kids

Sincerely, Millennials

Keep on printing that imaginary money and let it drive this economy into the stratosphere. Let that money roll around from person to person and may everyone have brand new iPhones or galaxies. Big screen HD tvs. New cars and mega packages under the Christmas tree. Forgive those school loans. Just a digital blip somewhere in a database. That imaginary deficit ain't hurting anyone.

Share the love all around this wonderful holiday season. Peace and love for everyone.

"Debt" is real money paid for by someone. But who?

Ignorant sarcasm

Stop printing/spending - how do you suggest we get out of this economic crisis we see ourselves in? "Stop printing, stop spending. It'll be tough now but better later!".. - before you even bother. Evidence, please? - When has the solution to failing demand ever, in the history of economic thought, been to save money and cut spending? When has this worked?

When we face economic structural stagnation - the point in which what we're doing hasn't been working for a predetermined number of business quarters - we must change what we're doing to face the problems at hand. This is not ideological, this is doing what's right for the economy when what's right needs to be done.

So why has student loan debt risen so drastically so fast?

What happened to the traditional approach, of "work" your way through school? Postpone what you can't afford until you've saved up enough to make it work. Apply for internships, use your friggin noodle and think it through, come up with a plan.

Education is an investment in ones personal future. The cost is the cost, if it doesn't pencil out don't get involved. It's a user be wary proposition. Use your friggin noodle.

Stupidity is not a virtue; some people are just dumb as shit. Our society has way too much compassion for idiots. The individual makes the choice, their friggin problem.

I'm already in for over 20k and have nothing to show for it except a GPA of 3.2 STEM, when my funding got pulled for circumstances beyond my control. Was ready to file my 3rd appeal of 4 allowed when evicted from my apartment, seems that's not critical enough, though a change in job hours puts you to the top of the list..letters from my program director and Dean had no effect..there is a process in academia they wish to hold on to federal funds as long as possible at my college and place the blame on committee when one swipe of the pen to override is always the end result. For the record, only 1 out of 5 semesters, was my funding received timely even though all paperwork had been completed. You are set up to fail by administration..shame because only 10% graduation rate exists for my program nationwide because of intensity..my last grade before I dropped out this fall was 99% in chemistry and top of my class.

Wow. I dropped out too. But mostly because of the anxiety I am having with the curriculum at my age and working full time. I have a 4.0 but decided it wasn't worth it at my age when I already have an acceptable job.

I hope you can apply for some scholarships and or grants. There are a lot of programs out there. Not sure what the criteria is but I would imagine that your very good GPA should qualify you for some other aid. Hey, best of luck. I hope you get to go back and finish. Some how. In many ways many US cirizens(I'm one of them) are undereducated. I love the way Tennessee helps send its young people to school and helps to pay for it through the lottery I think. I don't live there. Just read about it.

What happened is spiraling costs, thanks to bloated administration, giant wealth funds, non-profitable but expensive sports worship programs, and more. It used to be possible to work your way through a 4 year degree from summer jobs, now, not so much. My university was over 140,000 dollars for 4 years. If I waited til I had the funds to pay for that, I'd still be saving instead of 10 years into my earning potential and paid off loans. I got lucky with work, many of my friends and fellow students did not.

There are so many areas that "bootstraps" is a proven failed method. How long will you tell Americans to put down the fork while obesity and diabetes rates spiral higher and higher before some legislation is justified? How high a percentage of GDP does student debt need to get, crippling all the various economies that rely on spending that are going empty (like housing) because millenials are up to their eyeballs in student debt before some legislation is justified? And on and on, drugs, sex education, healthcare, and more. Americans cling to their just-so gutsy folk logic as the problems continue to spiral out of control while numerous other nations have figured out far more effective solutions.

College is simply another corporate money grab. Another profoundly well endowed tax-free industry like hospitals

Just another way to get your cash

But anyone who goes to school for 5+ years to get a basic communications degree with a minor in basket weaving only to land a 12 dollar an hour job at a call center is an idiot. Go to university for a bachelors degree for half a decade that will ultimately cost you 50-100k+, just to land a job that pays 30k a year. Do people not think this shit through?

No one wants to hire you now without a four year degree minimally for 30k..why do you think 51% of Americans who can land a job are making less than? It's not even a choice anymore with minimum wage being stagnant at 7.25/hr. Then there's also a whole new generation of millennial graduates I must compete with..experience is frowned upon because you interview with 30 year olds threatened by same.

What was minimum wage in 1964? $1.25

I'll be damned, 5 quarters made of actual silver are worth damn near 15 bucks today.

Something is wrong with our money.

This is a tragic surprise to those among us who do not understand the Governments ability to enter and warp a market beyond recognition.

The road to hell is always paved with good intentions...however, the good intentions of the SallieMae program were entirely predictable, insofar as these misguided "good" intentions leading to hell on earth!
Government guarantees of student loans have accelerated and exacerbated the skyrocketing cost of a College education these days.
Another market suffering the attentions of a benign governmental influence...thanks for helping!
What a mess indeed.
Thanks Uncle Sam!bongsmilie
