Marijuana Edibles Industry: Its Challenges & Future

Ever since pot became legalized in Colorado and the other decriminalized states, cannabis-infused edibles have had a growing presence in the marijuana marketplace. Nearly 5 million marijuana edibles were sold in Colorado in 2014 alone, and culinary connoisseurs came out with everything from medicated chocolate truffles, cookies, and popcorn to cannabis-infused coffee and protein bars for health-conscious 4/20 folk. All of these new marijuana snack innovations are making many foodies wonder…what are the implications for this promising new pot edibles industry? How can I, too, become a culinary cannabis connoisseur?

As the marijuana industry gains speed in the U.S., entrepreneurs are definitely seeking out exciting and innovative new ways to combine food and cannabis. However, there is a big challenge to overcome in bringing cannabis into a dining type of environment. When you purchase cannabis from a dispensary, you are not allowed to consume any on the premises. This creates a problem for anyone trying to incorporate cannabis into a restaurant type of environment. There are also no places in Colorado who openly advertise a BYOC “Bring Your Own Cannabis” environment, similar to a “Bring Your Own Beer type of restaurant, but I imagine that that might be one way to incorporate cannabis into the dining world.

Personally, I know that a slice of dark chocolate cannabis-infused cheese cake would definitely be on the bill if offered to me at my favorite local restaurant. I think the issue lies in the licensing problems that would arise from offering cannabis products in a standard restaurant or bar model. One thing people can do today to incorporate cannabis in food is buy infused coconut oil or other types of cooking ingredients from their local dispensary and then use them in their recipes at home. Cannabis-infused butter is perfect for making marijuana brownies, cookies, muffins, and so much more. I think the prospect of pairing cannabis with food like wine or even with wine is an excellent idea and one we will likely see in the near future as cannabis continues to be decriminalized.

2 edible producers in CO just had a massive recall due to their supplier of weed using Avid thus the edibles had an unexceptable ppm go pesticides…. .05ppm is too much imo

If it's only in Colorado that you can't smoke what you buy then why does Washington not have this problem? Several dispensaries when reading about them across the state, do have a small enjoyment room so you can vape, roll, hit a pipe or bong if you are unable to do so at home or current place of living. I applaud both Colorado and the recreational and medicinal marijuana communities on their work but as medically speaking, this needs to be a common comfort.
I am unaware of the statutes in place of Medical Marijuana in Colorado. Much like you get medical care for an injury, there should be accommodations for patients in the mmj area as well. I urge this to move on for patients, wonderful post. Thank you

I've tried many of them and made more. Yum!

The biggest obstacle to widespread use of canna edibles boils down to tolerance; if someone who smokes regularly eats a given edible and finds it effective, I'll bet my last dollar that same treat would WRECK a noob, leading to all kinds of problems.

This happened with my own mom; she isn't a daily user and a friend had made some canna cookies. Us tokers thought they were great, but I told my mom to only eat half. She did not take my advice and ate the whole thing. Ten minutes later, she's glassy eyed wasted, twenty minutes after that she's throwing up, spins, the works. I felt terrible. Frankly, I'm not sure that only eating half would have made much difference.

Until edibles can solve the tolerance problem, IMO they have no place in a restaurant or anywhere else people might eat them and then drive away.

Being one of the first to legalize, Colorado has its fair share of legal inconsistencies and this is perhaps the most glaring of them.

Like it should be. Just provide accommodations for those, even though it may not be technically legal, the loophole exists.

I guess that's how Washington felt when Oregon and Alaska got the ability to grow personal plants at home. I want nothing more than to do this.
It's the number one goal when you grow and still have to spend a crap ton just getting your grow up to speed. Dirt and other supplies aren't cheap but this should serve as a standard. Oh well Washington will soon make this happen. But there is plenty of wonderful pot to find around here.

Noob or high tolerance smokers, both get the same warning with my edibles - start small and work your way up. I have super high tolerance for smoking, but edibles are a whole different level. Knowing the mg per edible is important...my cookies are 150 mg and I tell people to start with 1/4th, wait at least an hour before taking more.

Good luck getting someone who's already stoned and hungry to follow THAT advice, LOL
