Greetings everyone. I have been lurking for a bit, reading some of the threads and just soaking up the info. Cool board, very informative. So I am a complete newbie that has started his very first grow ever. I guess I just wanted to find a new place to hang out sometimes and document my experiences both good and bad, maybe get some feedback or ideas along the way. I'm about 6 weeks in and I can say that I am really enjoying the process and learning more about it. I can totally see this getting addicting as even just a hobby or passion, beyond just the obvious medicinal and/or recreational reasons haha. Ok..so please bear with me and keep in mind that I began as a total novice. The idea is to gradually increase my knowledge and make improvements as I learn more.
I was so inspired when I got started that I just kinda rushed into it and did it. Shoestring budget and all. I figured even if it didn't come out great, at least the process of learning was underway and I could more effectively strategize my next grow and make upgrades as I go. I had an old metal cabinet that I once got from a closing bank, a big sturdy industrial type that stands a good 7 feet or so tall with decent depth. I basically just removed most of the shelves and was left with a nice solid box with plenty of room inside, and locking doors. It actually looks pretty inconspicuous all closed up.
I outfitted the top of the cabinet with a few cheapo clip on lights from Home Depot, and went with the most powerful LED bulbs they had on hand in the store. Again, I rushed into this and did not have a proper fan or ventilation setup for the cabinet, I was also concerned about heat. So I decided my first grow would also be an experiment with LED lighting. During the daytime light hours I open up the door and let an oscillating fan blow lightly all day, at night I turn it off and just close up the cabinet.
I germinated a small variety of bag seeds I had accumulated in late October and got them started a few days before Halloween. The plants I have growing now are: (3) Sour Diesel, (1) Skunk Haze, and (3) regular ass California outdoor middies haha. Those I just did as a toss in to have a few more plants since not all of my better quality strains hatched. I can tell you now, I already know the very first thing I am doing on my next grow is upping my genetics game and purchasing some feminized seeds from the seed bank here lol. No doubt about it.
So far all of the mid grade plants are getting strong and seeing decent growth. Of the Sour Dee plants, they are the most puny and only 1 is starting to show signs of taking off more. The Skunk Haze plant looks nice and healthy, not a monster but showing good steady progress. Soil wise I just went with normal miracle grow potting soil, although thats another thing I am going to get better with next time around. Early on I had a situation where some leaves were browning and dying on a few of the plants, I pruned a select few leaves and they seem to have rebounded pretty well.
Starting to get antsy to initiate the flowering stage and see what I got. Since I used bag seeds I still don't know what I am working with as far as males/females here. I'd say 4 maybe 5 of the plants seem to be at a good size right now to where if they double during flowering, my available space would be pretty full. But there's 2 maybe 3 that are still kinda weak and puny that I worry about. For flowering I am adding a red LED ufo light and just gonna let it do what it does.
Alrighty...so gonna get back to reading and learning more now haha.
