DO INTAKE FANS NEED FILTERS?

I have 2 intake 120 mm PC fans just wondering if i need a filter on them or it is okay for the plant to get unfiltered air ? had a filter on until now had to take it off due to not enough air movement.

I personally wouldn't run a grow without an intake filter. A filter can keep out dust, insects, pollen, spores ect. It's good clean air for a good clean grow room. I don't use a filter on the actual intake fan itself but it pulls air through a filtered duct, wich is essentially the same in a round about way. The intake moves much more air more quickly than just ambient air moving around. Filters get DIRTY so your buds don't

Kiwi said it best.

When extracting air out the room you create negative pressure sucking out smells.

Intake fans only create positive pressure pushing smells into the room.

Which one would you rather have?

Ditch the intake fans and just run the extractor fan it'll do both (leave the intake pipe in place minus the fans and DO filter the intake pipe) this is called passive intake.

That's why you use an intake fan with a lower cfm rating than the exhaust fan. You definitely want both. Plants love the fresh air. You don't need a filter on the intake fan per se. But as long as you have some sort of screen. Smells coming in are irrelevant. They're just volatile terpenes that evaporate..

The problem with using carbon filters on intakes is the muffling or reduction of airflow. You can just make a filter using paper or plastic ac filters. Keep in mind all that ac filters do is filter out debris. They don't remove pathogens or smells at all. So don't waste money on the more expensive one. It just shows reduces airflow. So if you go that route. Use a reusable ac filter.

Green gator filters is working on a good intake filter. It should be out soon.

No arguments here, but I can't see the benefit to having intake fans low cfm or plain pc fans, imho, it's just one more thing that can fail.

I just have a stand alone fresh air pipe with a pantyhose on the intake side, the scrubber is doing the grunt work of sucking out and pulling in fresh air. I'm just a less is more kind of guy, maybe there is a benefit but I'm not seeing it do drop some knowledge on this.

BTW my reasoning for just 1 fan running(extractor) is that if it were to fail than it will not allow for positive pressure to build up by having intake fans on, does that make sense to you?

No you got it right. Intake fans are a waste of time. I don't even filter my intake, never had an issue from it.

I get spiders in my tent sometimes. They are great. They eat all the flys haha

My Wife goes apeshit at the sight of a spider she calls me to kill it, I just calmly pick it up and leave on my deck or garage floor n/p.

I have plenty of spiders around my home, zero pest. I once went to my inlaws and had a hitchiker come back wth my suitcase (roach) when I opened the case the roach came out so fast I had no time to kill it, told my wife don't worry the spiders will get it, 3 days later found the carcass balled up in silk:cool:
