LEC - Light-Emitting Ceramic

To each his own I guess, I'm looking for a kit to outfit the luxor(sun systems reflectors, hydrofarm dropped the ball in reflectors)with a 315 agro elite and have no choice but to run the ballast remote. Hydrofarm may be a option in ballast but not reflectors. Did you see that lame attempt at a DE hood that actually cooled the lamp hydrofarm came out with?
I have an AC/DE for HPS, its awesome, im not familair with hydrofarm's version

this thread is about LEC, where hydrofarm offers an aircooled hood, and sun systems does not.

Right, on topic, those 315s can be put in any reflector you like since the lamp is universal.Vertical or horizontal, there's spectrum shift between the two.

so you use a mogul to GU-whatever adapter?

what ballast are you using - OG philips not rebranded by sun systems?

is vertical the preferred orientation?

I run nothing but SS lec until I outfit the luxor with a 315 kit of some type. preferably I think that runs the 2 pin agro elite t12 or t9

those luxors are awesome too bad they dont make them anymore. i wonder if it was the best merely because its vertical

the hydrofarm and sun systems vertical 315s are almost identical reflectors

I'm not sure, I'm just hoping a 315 will work well with it, if not I just unscrew the mogul adapter and unplug the ballast and toss in a solis matrix and whatever lamp I prefer.

I'll probably pay as much for a kit to fit the luxor as I would just to buy a phantom or lec. odd..

also keep in mind the luxor reflector was computer designed for a bulb of a given arc length. the 315s are much shorter bulbs. id bet youd see limited advantage (maybe disadvantage) relative to the hfarm or ss 315 hoods which were designed for that bulb specifically

electronic ballast = $200
bulb = $100
mogul adapter = $20?

cost of hfarm 315 with ballast, bulb, reflector, and all cords = $330

its like getting a free hood.

ill go make a par map of the 4 hfarm lecs in a 5x5 and report back

Right but I'm thinking I can get adapters to get it down where it should be. Right now I'm kinda struggling between just buying a couple more 120 volt SS lec because I can get them for 420 plus tax so not bad, my shop would probably do a better price on the hydrofarm systems of course but we'll see, I just dropped them an email.

Not bad. I like the ease of the built in ballast myself but that fucking price. I've asked my shop about hydrofarm. He does me near online price so.

I do like the way welthink makes all the specs clear. I don't see a lot of things about hydrofarm other than it is low freq square wave.
I haven't looked at the specs of the genuine philips ballast either but all seem to work, possibly some better than other possibly not enough to make a bit of difference.
There's just more choices out there and that means competitive pricing with any luck.

by my experience most shops are either all or none stocking hfarm vs. SS

consider their market - they have no interest in consumer education which ultimately fosters DIY

so whats our metric? we need someone with some good bench tech like a scope to measure the efficiency or wave characteristics of the ballast?

failing that ill challenge my local shop with the sunlight supply stock to a shootout, and bring my phantom there and take par measurements over a 4x4 area for the SS315 vs phantom for a given wattage at the wall....

Do that. I'm thinking if done without bias things will look almost identical. I haven't looked at the hydrofarm reflector just because. it's all a thing, some like hydrofarm , some like SS some don't like shit.

Althought as someone mentioned in that DE comparison I referred to earlier the reflector is pretty crucial to the numbers.

me too which puts hfarm at a huge advantage in all the other features i listed previously
