bigD: I think this is what I'm gonna end up trying. I'm just not sure how high above the holes I want to go though and there are 4 different types of "buckets" so it should be interesting (got the 16oz solo's, a 1 gallon paint can, the bottom of a lemonade container, and a 3 gallon rubbermaid).

Az - actually the big box stores around me don't carry the miniature pumps (which is all I need), and what I really need is a typical E&F type timer so that I can just run the pump for 1 minute at a time once a day or 1-4 minutes if I decide to use the restrictive emitters. I can't find a standard timer that goes less than 15 minutes as an interval and that would be flood city for a 16oz cup, even through a 2gph emitter (64oz into a 16oz cup with 12oz of medium).

I have been thinking of going hempy and have some questions if you got the time... Ive been wanting to go hydro and this seems like a very simple way.

I want to make a bubble cloner, can I transplant straight into the perlite?

can I use a bunch of hydroton at the bottom of the bucket to give it weight?

What about stabilizing the plant in the perlite when it is first transplanted?

I really want to move away from soil as it is really messy. Thanks for posting all this information. I imagine you see much quicker growth than with soil as well, Im excited to get started.

Another convert! Welcome, I too like having the pros of both soil and hydro without as many cons from either arena.

You can definitely transplant from bubble cloner directly to hempy. Use hydroton if you really think you need to. It definitely won't hurt anything, are you planning on using tall/skinny vessels? I should note however that if you go above your drain hole with the height of the hydroton, I'm not sure it will be able to wick mositure up any higher as the perlite will tend to do (to some extent). Unless somebody knows specifically otherwise and speaks up....I would try to keep the hydroton level below the drain hole by 1/2" or so.

The plant should be stable enough in the perlite mix. Just make sure it is wet and kinda pack in around it good. The vermiculite in the mix will help with this as well.

ok, I'm definately doing this, but I got some ?'s. would a trough lookin thing work?(4ftx1.5ft and maybe 1 ft. deep) put like 15 clones in it and flower immediately. and can the perlite/vermiculite be reused? and if so, could I just pull the finished plants out and stick a new clone in, or would I have to get all the dead roots out?

hey ariz.im running dwc and what problems would i have just taking a well rooted vegger and doing the hempy??do you use just perlite are verm,mixed at a certain ratio? ty i know this is posted in this long thread and cant find it sorry for the trouble.my plants look like the first 1 u posted except your buds a double mine.

you can transplant from dwc to hempy with lil to no shock or slow growing from transplant....just try an get the roots as close to the bottem as possible so there closer to the res an you wont have to wait as long.....as for the trouth you can defently use that just make sure you have adiquate drainage holes on the sides....peace az

Thanks for the reply PP. I am getting my setup out the closet and into some cabinets I am converting. I figured why not just change to a hydro set up but I wanted something that gives me the cushion that soil does.. say.. if the power goes out..LOL. I have some square trash cans I picked up that are pretty tall... like 14" or so. I figured I should only put about an inch of hydroton on the bottom an maybe some around the drain hole to keep the perlite from escaping. I will have to check and see if I can get vermiculite. This fall should be a lot of fun, I have several strains to grow Thanks again!!

I have some trash cans too, but haven't tried using them yet. The ones I got were slightly roundish because I was worried about the skinny ones tipping. I am like a bull in a china shop when it comes to plants.

i know lots of people who do hempy's in taller then wider contaiers they seem to like it more then short squat containers as it has partly todo with plant stabilty....but imo you lose overall stabilty as the taller containers are tip prone if bumped...peace az

Hmm that's crazy you mention it Az, I was gonna ask. In my cab, I only have about 4 foot height, so I've been training it, but I kinda feel like I should transplant to a bigger (in diameter at least) container, so I can space it a little better. But if I only have one foot vertically of perlite, will this ultimately stunt it's growth? I mean it's been in 12/12 almost 2 weeks, and I only vegged for 3. Got the nice healthy drinking roots in the bottom of the 44oz styrofoam. I think it will help that the roots wont have to go very far to the bottom, and since I'm training it, those drinking roots help it recover pretty fast. So do you guys think the roots will grow outwards sufficiently enough? I'm thinking 1 foot vertically, and and 1 foot or just over 1 foot diameter.

Az, is the drbud fert good through flowering? I've got plenty of preflowers now. The Fish emulsion and schultz with R/O has been perfect for it so far. Leaf color and structure are awesome.

I put this plant into the hempy cup after I grew it in a peat puck for about 5 days? It's not looking too good...I am feeding with water soluble nutes at 1/4 strength twice daily to keep the water fresh, is it just time to get bigger or what???

Edit: When I transplanted the roots almost reached the bottom of the cup...1 long big root that was like 1 cm in diameter
