Yeah, I use maybe 22 gallons (I use coolers for a res for my 2x4 trays). I can fill the whole tray to the top with it. But, they were expensive, I think like 80$ each. They keep the water colder much longer than a normal res though, so in the veg room I like them better. It is a little small, I have to add water every 3 days or so, but no biggy. It takes maybe 17 gallons to fill the tray when there is 16 pots of hydroton in the tray (hydroton displaces a decent amount of water) but now that I've switched to using rockwool, I only have to flood a couple of inches max so it's actually Hella big now. 25 gallons wouldn't fill a 4x4 res, I use 50 gallon res for a 4x4 tray, would prefer even 70 but 50 works fine. It takes about 32 gallons to fill a 4x4 tray Id reckon, to the top.Did you say you used a 25gal rez for your flood trays? Is that a little small?
I build them with 2x4s, this way I can build them to exactly the height I want the tray to sit (usually as low as possible but enough room for the res to slide under the tray and frame). Cheap and sturdy as they can be, easy to take apart etc. I like to also to easily access the res for watering, mixing etc, so I like the front of the res out from under the tray so I can do that easily. It really sucks when the res is completely under the tray, pretty much impossible for me to mix anything when they are like that, so keep the in mind alsoWhat do you reccomend for a tray stand?
For a 2x4 tray, yes, any bigger, no. Depending on how high you'll be flooding, the cooler works well. If you're completely flooding the tray to just below the top and your plants are getting big and drinking a lot, you'll have to add water every couple of days at peak veg. If that's not an issue, they work great, if you would like to go longer between adding water, a bigger res would be better, I go in the veg room daily so adding some water isn't a big deal. Also, if you use bottom draw pumps you'll be able to go longer before adding water because they pump water from the bottom rather than the sides, so you'll have an extra 4 gallons or so if water in the res that the pump can use.I found the cooler you use but its only 25gal. Does it seem like enough?
I literally just switched from using hydroton to using rockwool blocks two weeks ago, so I'm just learning how to grow with them as I go. Some of them I'll be flowering in a 4x4 tray as is, just in the blocks, for some others I'm going to try something new but similar to how I grow in my ebb buckets. I'll be using these (in the pic) instead of my foam boards that hold the round pots. I plan on putting a small layer of hydroton in the bottom of the lid, setting the rockwool on top and then trying a suspended pot rockwool grow. Not sure if it will work or not, I might set up some sort of drip system which feeds the rockwool and use the ebb system to flood just the roots that will grow down into the bucket. Not sure how it will go, just kind of an experiment I'm hoping will work lolOnly plan on vegging a few weeks before the flip anyways. What are you going to do with the rockwool cubes for flower? Just leave them in?
They're probably a bit wider than the ebb buckets but it will sit on top and cover the opening for sure, probably won't clip on like it would on a 5 gal bucket though but it just needs to cover the bucket so no biggy. A 3x3 tray is a bit bigger than a 2x4 tray so I'd recommend a bit bigger res for thatSeems like a cool idea. Will those fit in the ebb buckets?
I'm going to go with a 3x3 tray anyways.
I start seeds in either rw or root plugs, then once it gets rooted well plant in the hydroton, level with the top of the hydrotonAny tips for starting a plant from seed in hydroton? I was thinking in roto rooter and then cut it open and put it in the net pot with hydroton?
The lids suspends the smaller pot inside of the bigger ebb bucket pot, so I don't need to use hydroton to fill in the ebb bucket pot. The only hydroton is in the smaller 1 gallon pot so I have a gallon of hydroton per plantDid you say that by using the foam lids that is saves hydroton? How?
