i have a hard time deciding between t5 and hps 600w cool hood

hi every one !

first of all le me intuduce myself a little . i grow for fun . i have been reading here and on the web for more than a year for ways to grow infos .

i have a garden for my vegetable and a lot of indoor exotic plant .i am interseted in learning to grow better .

here i found a lot of infos but a lot of wrong infos as well.

i already had t5 ho 54w for vegging all my vegetables so i decided to give it a try for my other grow

i used to grow outdoor for fun but this winter i built myself an indoor grow room . it is like a hobby .weird but true lol

my indoor room is 4 deep x 6.5 large x 5 high

i went all the way with t5 fixture . 9 bulb 54 w ho 6500k vegging and 3000k in flowering

first grow was autos

i bought a ph pen because my water at home is always above 12 .it cost me a fortune in bottled water

i have GH nutes and mystic supplement .

i had few problem with spot on leaves and few minors problems that i resolved on at a time .

still learning for nutes schedules .

it went well but was way longer than advertised but i had a decent harvest .not impressed but was ok .

i kept as colose as 2 inch from top .

i have a 6 inch vortex fan tha t keep bringing fresh air on a dimmer.

1 fan in a corner that swing

temperature is really easy to maintain . keep it around 24-28 degre. i have a window slighly open and air intake near it .but winter here is often -20 so cold air is not a problems .

in the summer it will be harder i think .that is the reason i cant decide what to buy right now.

it is my second grow indoor and ready to switch to flowering

i am asking myself if it is worth to switch for an HPS system considering i will need to built higher roof to fit hps light ans put another fan to vent the light .

will heat be an issue .i think so but need you to confirm

but will it run cooler than hps 600w in cool hood ?????????????.if i put the casing of the hood outside the cabinet and vented will it be cooler than t5 . ballast outside grow room too

a lot of forum says it cost less to run t5ho . but watt for watt i think it is not true . 600w t5 vs 600w hps it will cost same thing no?. amp circuit is not a problem i have 2 different circuit.
is it true about same watts cost same thing . thanks for clarify that for me . i asked 2 electrician and got 2 different answer lol

so will it be more difficult to run hps in this small grow room . is it worth it ??

a lot of person says yes but they never did t5 grow .

thanks for helping me choose my next light set up .

and thanks for all the great infos on this forums !!

DO NOT TRY TO FLOWER UNDER T5s UNLESS YOU WANT LOW QUALITY AND LOW YIELDS! HPS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO FOR FLOWER STILL, AT LEAST UNTIL LEDs and PLASMA LIGHTS GET BETTER AND MORE AFFORDABLE.

I flower with T5's

it's actually simple T5's will give you lower yields but higher quality
HPS will give you higher yields with lower quality

@DCobeen did a side by side

Cool. I also run a fully sealed co2 enriched grow and t5s wont do the trick when it comes to CO2. If I had problems getting electricity or was trying to save on electricity I am sure t5s would be a good option, but def not a good move for my flower room. I do however love hot5s for veg. I too did a side by side with T5s vs 600s and all my patients liked the HPS buds better and my yield was 68% more under the HPS, then again I use the highest quality full spectrum HPS bulbs around so that def helped.

What T5 bulbs did you use ?

I use several different ones to create a full spectrum

Okay I used a 12 bulb 648 watt T5 HO with aquarium bulbs cost me $250 total and I had a 600 watt hps cost me $200 the 600 yielded just a bit more but the quality from the T5 blew the 600 away. Both had same density. I ran 6 plants under the T5 and 6 under the 600.
Pros
T5 less heat 600 had to run AC
T5 better quality allot better.
600 hps I got like 24 grams more total
this was using same space for each light. I could have added 3 more plants to the 600 hps as the light pattern goes out further.
600 hps will penetrate down 6 ft
T5 with Aquarium bulbs penetrate about 4 ft.
So If I was growing for myself hands down it would be T5's. If it was for cash I would do 600 if you just wanted to make a few bucks. But they wouldn't be running back to buy yours with 600 hps but would with T5's. Now that is what i experienced.

To do it for myself now I would take a 1000 watt hps and put 4 4bulb 4' t5 around the 1000 hps then you would have the best of both worlds. after I harvest 2 harvests I am buyin t5's to add around and in the middle of my 4 1000 watt hps lights. It will change the game.

thanks you very much for your response . exactely the kind of answer i was hoping for .
someone like me who already tried it .not saying dont do that .i have been answered that many times .

i will try hps next winter .i will continue with my t5 set up for now .

my first yeild with t5 was the same things as my outdoor yeild but with plant was half the size indoor so i was happy with the result .

thanks again

Interesting. So, HOW is the quality better with the T5's? THC/CBD content? taste?

What an amazing forum this is. i wish i had access to this info 20 years ago.

going with t5 means finding and using the right bulbs. Bro ask and I willl help you mix them in right. See I love t5 cause I can add more uv or more of whatever i want. Hps can do it if you know what we do. If it wasnt for Rm3 i would not be able to do what I do with hps.

I did almost exactly this last grow but with a 600w and 4 ATI bulbs (3 blue, 1 coral) Super smoke. Pulled a lb+ out of 6 plants. Had 1 foxtail a bit. Trying to figure best heights and maybe routine where the t5 is not on all the time.

You bring out more genetics/traits from a strain as you can hit all photosynthesis using T5's

Yep... so if I read this correctly, a combination of both HPS and T5 should give me the best of both situations: Higher yield from the HPS and better quality from the T5's.

I think that's what I'm gonna do.

Thanks

I belleve @RM3 has a new favorite though. In any case, he is the guy to suggest your array.
No I still love ATI it's just that the Wave Points are cheaper, and get it done, just don't last as long in an 8 tuber I would do 1 actinic, 2 reds (this could be a GE 4100K or an UltraWave ) and 5 blues, you could mix like 3 Coral Pluses with 2 6500K or you could go all Coral Plus best to play with it a bit and find what works best in your garden

That would be the 8 bulb for top and the sides I would add 1 of each actinic/coral plus/wavepoint Ultra Wave and 4100 or 3000k. depends on the area size if you have enough room I would do a cmh 400 in middle and 4 4 bulb on each side or a 600/1000 hps depending if you already have a hid light. Also depends on area and how hot it gets as hid will put out more heat than a T5 will. See Rm3 uses all T5 cause he achieves perfect canopy temps and room temps. canopy can go as high as 94F and room temps around 84 max for both.

Where did you get those bulbs? I haven't seen reddish ones locally

I just did some searching on Amazon. I sort of see a noob problem for someone like me. The diff spectrum bulbs have different wattages. Will this cause a problem? What type of ballasts will this work on?

I use all 54 watt T5HO bulbs 48 inch or 4 foot

There should be no mixing of wattage's

I got the Ultra Waves from Amazon
The ATI and Agromax lines are available in local stores here in Denver & Ft Collins
