Vero29 with Osram Drivers

Sup guys,

I convinced a few of my HPS friends to convert to cobs.

We will be taking 42 vero29's and 42 80w osram drivers.

Each cob will be driven at 1.4A and each cob will have its own driver.

The reasoning behind these drivers is that they are very cheap because they are locally manufactured.

Any comments good and bad welcomed.

Here is the data sheet to the driver.

Also we can only take one color temp or the price goes up drastically. What is the best for veg and flower although it must be a better flower light than veg. Hope this makes sense.

I chose to go with 3500K for my Vero29 build and have been very happy with my choice. My 2 cob yields so far have beat the yields of 4 years of growing with HPS. Couldn't be happier with the 3500K.

How hot do they run?

Depends on how cheap the drivers are. A high wattage driver powering multiple cobs tends to be the cost effective solution.
I agree, The drivers are good quality and they are cheap if we take more than 40. I have never seen a cob in front of me, so its hard to judge how hot they get. At 1.4A do you think i can get away with passive cooling? like a 200 x 200 x 60mm heat sink?

A basic cooling calculation is based on surface area, 120 cm2 per watt of heat for passive operation, 40 for fan cooled. At 1.4 amps Vero29 will produce about 28-29 watts of heat.

My Meawell drivers go 1.05 amps max, but I run my relatively soft and keep them in the low 30ish watts each and shoot for a PPFD of mid 700s. Around 800ma about 8" from the canopy with no reflector or lens. I built for passive in case the fans failed but run a 120mm fan on each bar to keep them cool. So how much space are you trying to cover with 42 Vero 29s?

I'm guessing you're covering about 100sq ft by those numbers? Wow.

It will considerably cheaper active cool those than it will to passive. More labor and parts for active however..

Sadly only 6 are mine to play with. The rest is split between 4 other guys. The guy with the big op taking 20.

I will be helping them put it together and post progress here so u guys can pitch in.

I was thinking of buying 6 CPU coolers for my 6 cobs. Mount them on 2 parallel rails and put the drivers on deck plate inbetween.

How can one easily cut the cob if the fan fails?

I dont mind the extra labour or cost for the cooling.i wana use this light for a while.

If i convert it to usd its around 19 dollers delivered.

The only real reason im scared of using hgl 185 meanwell drivers is that the guy at this electronics supplier said that because each cob has its own caracteristics. . . fuck i forgot ill phone him again first thing in the morning.

Anyway u guys are driving your cobs in strings of 3 4 5 cobs per driver and its working so i dunno. Ill report back

I'm not gona go into to much detail here but i decided to stick with a driver for every cob.

going to have a cpu cooler on every cob.

Not enough information in the specs. Doesn't give the size of the surface you want to mount your Vero29 to, AND it doesn't give the thermal resistance. My 2 cents worth: don't go cheap on the cooling. Go with a Alpine 11 as a minimum. It is a proven performer.

we have already found a better one, i spoke to the supplier and they said it should disipate 50w of heat easy so i should be safe?

I need to think of some way to cut the power if a fan fail.

one with a flat surface, ill ad a picture now

So what heatsink did you decide to go with?

But it has a large flat base.

I like your drawing of overlapping photon torpedo cones! One cob per square foot? And that cooler looks a lot better. If you want to protect your cob, check out Dawgs thread. He has a thermal resistor that shuts down the driver if it gets to hot. Designed by RobinCnn...a sharp pencil!

I like your drawing of overlapping photon torpedo cones! One cob per square foot? And that cooler looks a lot better. If you want to protect your cob, check out Dawgs thread. He has a thermal resistor that shuts down the driver if it gets to hot. Designed by RobinCnn...a sharp pencil!

I will show you my grow, I'm only getting 12 of the cobs though and ill document that. If you want stuff drawn up in 3D leme know dude it takes me 2 mins....

Even cheaper, and probably OK if you do the math (I chose this for ~36W build):

Apparently CDI is my new favorite website, or at least Mechatronix is my new favorite heat sink maker and they are the only ones carrying them.

Anyway, passive means not worrying about computer fans failing, and no wiring or drilling holes if you get a heat sink predrilled for an Ideal cob holder. But active is much lighter, much cooler, and runs a COB more efficiently. I am lazy and chose passive.

each to his own, I can get the CPU coolers for next to nothing and i have a whole bunch of plc programers at my disposal, and they are quite good with the light current stuff.
