Start seedling in 5 gal pot = risky?

My friend started his seedling in a 5 gallon pot and the roots filled the whole pot when the seedling got around 2.5ft tall.
Do you think starting seedlings in 5 gal pot will make the plant rootbound when it is bigger?
If you started a seedling in 5 gal pot, would the plant be able to reach max 3ft tall during flowering without getting rootbound?

You didn't mention indoors or outdoors. Outdoors the plant will be limited by the pot. Indoors I've never seen a 2.5 foot plant fill an entire 5 gallons worth of dirt for plants that size I only use 3 gallons. If my memory serves me when I grow a 3 footer indoors in a 3 gallon planter only about half the dirt has thick root growth. I do transplant from small to large planters in all cases. I start in solo cups, move to 1 gallon, move to 3 gallon and beyond for outdoor.

Eventually too much veg and it will get root bound yes, starting in a big pot can actually grow pretty quick if watered correctly. Careful training the plant too as a 3ft bush can have much more roots then a 4ft tree.

If I start a seedling in a 5 gallon pot, will it be ok to veg until the plant is around 1.5ft tall then start flowering? The height is 3.2ft max for the strain.
Or should I just put seedling in a cup, then transplant to 2 gal pot, then transplant to 5 gal pot?

Probably not, with no training you should be at 18" in a month or less. That's not exactly root bound but you should have a good foundation of roots in 5 gallons by then.

Thanks, which method would work better to transplant or start in 5 gallon bucket? Or will both methods be fair?

Not sure of your seed choice .... Photoperiod or Auto.

You can start any if these in a 3 or 5 gallon pot , without much issue.
The photoperiod seed will utilize the 5 gallon pot more effectively than the auto seed.
With the photoperiod seed , you can DECIDE .........

( how long you want to veg )
( how TALL you want it before flip ) - up to 12" before flip is a good start
Sativas can grow up to 3x the size .
Plus you can train them , supercrop them , prune them , shit on them and they would mostly be fine.

Your VEGGING of said plant will determine how much of a root mass you will end up with.

My example ( 3x3x6 ) :
Photoperiod sativa
Supercropped and topped

But for an AUTO SEED - i find ( at least for indoor ) Anything bigger than 3 gallons
is a waste of medium. It never produces the size of rootball because of its short life.
It will begin preflower within 30 days so longer veg cant really happen.

Thanks I use photoperiod seeds.
When you supercropped and topped your plants do you think it increased your yield?
Yes absoultely ... I was able to bring up the lower budsites ( and only had a couple of renegade colas get bigger than rest but that is a win ! )

LST is another great method and you will able to FORM its shape.

Heres a Money Maker that went in a nursery pot straight into a 5gal pot, vegged for 2 week.Flowered for 11 weeks 4days. Just harvested, here are the roots.IMG_0745.JPG IMG_0751.JPG IMG_0754.JPG it was only 19in.
It filled almost all the dirt, probably 5-8% dirt was not attached

its the 3rd or 4th grow
Yeah, up to you. I really dont know how good of a grower you are so i cant say what would work better all i know is its easier to fuck up in a bigger then needed pot.

That started as a seedling in a 5 gallon and matured in 2 weeks?

seedling in nursery pot for a week, then vegged in 5 gal pot for 2 weeks. I flowered too early because my friend insisted to for reasons I will not get into lol...
I would of vegged another 2 weeks if I could. Live and Learn

How tall were your plants and how much yield did you get?
They still got a little tall ( some of the colas were taller than others ) mostly at the edges and back. I let them run to about week 13 ( 4 week veg - cropped - 9 week flower )
I ended up with about 21 ounces from the 2 plants total - one plant suffered a little lockout in the later weeks but it finished ok. I really dont like running heavy sativas as much because of the time involved. I didnt get to sample until 2 weeks after that. But it was good bud just time consuming.

You mentioned to wait until the plant is around 12 inches tall before putting it to flower right?
If you are super cropping and topping the plant, will you still need to wait until it is 12 inches tall to flower?
I cropped a few branches ( mostly topped ) in creating a more uniform plant.
12" inches is just an example of controlling height - that is where you will have to JUDGE how much room your grow space can handle. If i had the space ... I would have let her rip.
Indicas are more bushy and usually not an issue for me ( except some pruning ).

You got 21 ounces wet or dry? What kind of lights you used?

I lost about 3.5 ounces at end but cured buds around 67% for sticky ickyness.
These were Double LED panels ( depending on stage of growth ) , i always tried to kerp panels between 15 - 18" of canopy.

As you can see i dont have a lot of space. image.jpg
