Lumens Question

So next week I'm going to be receiving an LED light fixture that puts out 14,000 lumens. All of the info I've read about lumens are anecdotal. I understand temps, humidity, and CO2, have to be regulated as well as soil conditions but, what I'm really trying to do is grow an oz or two a month. More would be better so I can build up a 'backlog' of cured stuff for my girl and, maybe, get into some advanced growing in a small (7 X 7 ft space) including seeds and clones. From what I've read 14,000 is a lot. Should I put it on a dimmer switch or let it rock? It only uses 150 Watts which isn't hard to offset but I don't want to over light my babies.

A 1000w hps puts out 140000 lumens. There are people that use a 300w led (true about 135w) for a smallish space. 7 by 7 is way too large for 150w of light, no matter the source, imho.

Really? How about maybe 200 micro mol concentrated at about 510 nano meters. The PAR is off the charts , should grow great ganja. Too bad it is entirely green light and the least photosynthetically useful.

Better help might come from some details on what exactly this 14000 Lumens of led is.

sounds like you are not in love with those cute imaginary characters called photons. some of us still consider radiant power and spectrum to be important

So you used two terms, radiant power and spectrum. By definition, PAR is one number, unlikely to describe two things. It doesn't, it summaries photons over a range of wavelengths. But not all wavelengths are identically useful.

I am fine with PAR, lux, lumens, or even spectral maps but I fail to see how anyone asking questions is helped, especially in the newbie forums, by PAR without comment or content.

Good question. First I have to go find out what PAR means but I love research. According to the people I'm getting it from is is a daylight spectrum LED typically used for street lighting poles. To be honest I didn't expect them to send one that's throwing out that much light but I'm not going to complain about a freebie at this point.

It's cool man I'm a pretty bright guy. Whenever I come across a term I don't understand I just research it until I understand it. That said there are so many opinions left and right on all the variations on how to grow sometimes I stop and ask questions of people who have done so successfully in the past.

The power is part, the spectrum is part. Many street lights are in red spectrum, hps lights typically are. 300w led (real power 125w growing lights) are good for 2x2 feet ish.

Daylight implies around 5000k, those are often the least useful but it depends. Daylight at 6400k is great for vegging plants.
