Well if they can prove 0% of their population has supported ISIL then sure. Otherwise...

"The term is also occasionally employed to refer to modern events, peoples, states or parts of states in the same region, namely Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey are sometimes considered Levant countries"

Even then they are part of the same region............No Way Around it.

We know where this kind of thinking comes from though.

‘Levant’ is a creaky and colonial term for the Eastern Mediterranean, which the Oxford Encyclopedia tells us includes “Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and part of southern Turkey.”

The thing is they are not the end all be all for definitions......Sorry Israel you are part of the term Levant in that region whether you want to be or not.

The fact they have some of their own joining ISIL and have helped groups of ISIL with fighting, support, etc. kind of makes the whole argument moot.

I realize this is to keep them away from Israel's interests as part of an agreement and a tactical move.

You realise the President and Administration are the only Govt worldwide to call them ISIL?

Most just say IS because adding any letters at the end semi-recognises their territory.

However saying Levant is still inaccurate because Iraq is not in the Levant.

Syria is in the Levant. "Islamic State of Iraq & Syria/The Levant."

In reality this whole argument is silly anyway, you can't take a name that's in durka-durkabic, translate it to English and then abbreviate it.

But only our leadership calls them ISIL, noone else does.

Want to just called them Daesh? That's their Arabic nickname. Doesn't really matter.
