Is it possible to say grow a plant to full term and get reasy for harvest say a nice well trained plant that is optimized for a micro grow. Take that plant and just basically crop the buds and the top 1/3 of the plant and then switch it back to a gradual veg state or something like that? Basically is it possible to have a plant and be able to perpetually harvest from it?

Re-vegging.
Monster-cropping is pulling clones during flower.
I have re-vegged a few times, mostly phenos i didnt clone (still banging my head over that) but sometimes they can hermie under re-veg so you gotta keep an eye out.
I'm confused with the term clone used in this situation. I'm leaving the roots and some portion of stem for the plant to regrow the rest is harvested

A clone is a branch pulled from the mother that roots into the same plant as a copy. When you pull clones during flower, its called monster cropping.

When you pull clones during veg, its called cloning

When you veg back your flowering plant after harvesting the top or nothing at all, its called re-vegging.

Sounds like a good idea for stretching a female seed and getting a regular harvest and then turn around and breed it for a seed crop

Just clone them multiple times during veg. Once your clones are rooted then you can flower one or both of each to see if you like them, if you do then you still got clones for another session! You can keep the ball rolling as long as you have a mother plant.

Would you have to keep the mother plant off to the side?

You can reveg, you just have to leave a couple growth tips/popcorn buds. I prefer to Monster Crop (taking clones within the first 3 weeks of flower to reveg)
