Replacing 2000 watts of HPS with 1000 watts COB LEDs

So... I harvested 6 plants that were directly under two mailboxes (110 watts each) and they also got a bit of the Photon 180. It was only 2 trays, about 2x2 or so. Of course this not a scientific test by any means, but a good indication of what's to come.

6 plants- 3 Pineapple Express and 3 Critical Kush. They vegged for about a month under T5 light. They were not topped at all, just grown naturally. The PE beat the CK, 3 1/2 ounces for the CK and 5 ounces for the PE.

All in all, I harvested 260 grams, trimmed and dried.

Now, if you call it around 300 watts, it's a .86 gpw. 400 would be .65, so I think it's somewhere in between.

The quality is certainly better than under my 1000 hps, buds are tight and nicely frosted. All in all, I am quite happy. This has been the hottest summer in years and I was able to keep the room under 84 degrees consistently. I don't have a chiller, so I use frozen bottles to keep the water around 73 degrees. Not ideal by any means and still I think it's a great pull for adverse conditions.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me in this transition to cobs, especially @kmog33 and Robin at Northern. I had my doubts about switching, but now I just can't wait to get another Photon (next week after I get back from Lockn') and improve on my yields.

As always, I'd love to hear what you guys think, and any tips or suggestions!

Well, yea- I am in a room that has 6 RDWC trays in a 7x3 configuration. Over the space are 4, 2 cob 4000k lights and a Photon 180 at 3000k. There is also a 600 hps that is going aways next week. The gpw is an estimate because I only harvested 2 trays that had 2 4000k lights and the Photon was next in the line, but not directly over the harvested plants.

So, yea, it's and estimate as far as gpw because of the variables and the fact that I don't harvest the whole system at the same time. I'm estimating the plants that were harvested received the most light form the 2 mailboxes (220 watts, directly over them), but also benefited from the nearby Photon.

I hope that makes sense, LOL. Thanks for the kind words, dro!

That's a great first run with them, especially if you've changed nothing else but the lights in your setup. Just like any lighting type, you need to have your system optimized for what you're using.

What you'll notice with cobs is your canopy temps should/need to be a bit higher than HPS due to the lack of ir that raises the leaf temps in cobs. If you're pulling 2 mailboxes plus a little bit of the photon you're probably more between 250-300 watts than 300-400. Not too shabby regardless. Should be able to pretty easily bring your yields up to 1-1.25 gpw as you get used to the new system.

Great work.

Thanks, man- that is what I'm thinking, too. I can't wait to tweak it up, LOL. Plus, if I was running 6 Pineapple plants (everything else being equal), it would have been more like 10 ounces. That's why I never really cared about gpw, there are too many variables. I am extremely happy with the quantity and quality of this first, all-cob harvest!

Thanks. And I just want to say that I have been following the led stuff for a while now and I can now confidently say that cob led is better than hps. Unreal. You can actually replace your expensive to run hps with a more cost effective cob led and get even better end results!
Really happy for u brother

OK, just back from Lockn' and the garden has exploded while I was away for 4 days. It's crazy how your perception is altered when you don't watch the grow every day, LOL.

I am also ready to pull the trigger on another light so I can get rid of the HPS. I am figuring another NGL Photon 180 at 3000k. Is that still the best deal out there at the moment?

It's going to go just to the right of the closest mailbox in the above photo.
An this is the 2x3 section (6 plants, 2 tubs) it's going to hang over:

Here is a single stalk plant that was ready when I got back from Virginia:

And again, thanks to everyone who has helped me and commented on my grow. I'd like to order the new light ASAP, so if anyone knows of a better deal than the Photon (I doubt it!), please let me know!

Cheap option, I didn't make them. They don't get hot at all. Some have fans, some have just really big heat sinks. I freaking love them, but I do need one more, more powerful light to go with the them and the Photon. The spacing of the cobs are perfect for the way my system is set up, too!

I think you need better genetics. Good luck!

Ur doing a great job...I tend to agree with @Yodaweed ...
nothing offensive,, being constructive with u,,based off ur pics,u should have tons of colas and frost.but the frost looks nice in the clos-up pic u took ...But have noticed under the COBS,just ridiculous frost with good genetics...
great job tho my man,,,really cool shit..good luck homie
