I looked at them from the idea of a pin or something passing up through the hollow of the fin, but there was no clearance. Then I said: "DUH" its slotted just like 80/20.......

and that's how it came about!

update:
made a major breakthrough on the clu-058 light engines. all new ones will be second generation with detachable reflectors (previously you had to unmount the chip to take off the reflector, as the reflector and the chip shared mounting screws). just a better setup all around. just spent two hours dremeling a bunch of the new holders, am covered in microscopic plastic bits (thank god for respirator lol). in addition to being better mounting for the chips, its just better optics all around- no relieving of the reflector and light leaks off to the side. reflector sits squarely and throws better pattern, users can remove reflectors easily as needed, or use any of the other compatible angelina designs with different angles, etc.

also will be adding mounting/hanging hardware inspired by @pop22 (thanks buddy i owe you one... scratched my head on this for a long time but you made it so easy :)

so.. a major upgrade and thanks to you guys who are waiting patiently... it will be worth it!

i will have the hanging hardware on tuesday and plan to ship them all on that day (usps 2-3 day, so we have them before christmas)

CLU1825 3500k 80cri
140 x 80 pinfin
hlg320h-1400b

71W/cob w/dimmer maxed
gonna add a toggle to open dimmer leads to get to 74W ea
pinfins are pretty cool, 45C with my ir thermometer.

just bjbs on there, no provision for reflectors ill try to take some 3x3 tent measurements.

i feel like after my 5th or 6th one i know what i want in the rack. im gonna reduce the 4 banger from 24x24" to 21x21", eliminate those two center rails, flip the inner rails holding the heatsinks around and that will be my driver shelf. maybe 2 more passes before i go to the metal shop and say "ok make me 100 of these rails"

by keeping it as simple as possible and reducing material i hope to make it an affordable bolt-together project for anybody. Were approaching $1/watt at high efficiency in kit form thats a goal for me
Just curious is this the light light setup you sent to Jimmy the P? I've been reading this thread and trying to sort this all out and wondering what you shipped us. thanks I can't wait to meet you I have questions and a love this shit!

light engines are built-to order with your choice of chips, please allow 3 days for assembly prior to shipping
Reading further down on the web page...
light engines are built to order, please allow 1-2 weeks, or email for current backlog status

that 3 day notice was in a separate description field that i neglected to update, that was the default leads time when i was building 1 or 2 a week

hope to get caught up and back to short lead time. the design changes i made recently should help that

I received my order, it came with MX-4 that I did not order and is missing the machine screws for the heatsinks.

Its not a big deal, I just thought I'd let you know.

mx4 was a gift- merry christmas! ,may not have been reflected on your packing slip

look carefully for the screws in the packaging, they get lost easily, if theyre missing let me know i can drop some in the mail

running 4000k 80 cri in veg right now and internode spacing is so tight its awesome. These are going to grow some dense buds!

Can someone recommend a build for a 4x4 or 5x5 using citizens 1212 or 1818. I do live in a hot state so that causes my confusion. Do I need more cobs to be more efficent == less heat?

yes for a given wattage, more cobs = less wattage per cob = less heat. you can also use larger cobs that are high efficiency at higher wattage

for example a 1212 at 50W is about as efficient as a CXM22 at 65W is about as efficient as an 1825 @ 80W. obviously the larger chips are more expensive

you want about 30W/SF normally so for a 4x4:
12-16 1212
9-12 cxm22
4-9 1825

I did this, running 1825's actively cooled and its pretty awesome. 2 1825's vegging a 4x3 right now real well. I already ordered 4 more 1825's cause I am very pleased with these lights. Driving them with hlg 320's per 2 cobs so 160w per 1825 engine.

well you need larger heatsinks so.. maybe

a lot of people cool the 1825s actively which is economical

passive - up to 70W on 120mm, up to 100-110W on robin's SSTX
active- up to 300W

Do people active cool pin fins? If so, do they just zip tie on some case fans? Come summer I may have to do this and haven't come up with anything clever or eye appealing.

robin's 120 regular sinks have a 4 hole bolt pattern with holes on 4 of the centered pins so u mount a fan on top of the pins
a small fan iirc 40mm ??
