I agree it is very lame. Lets keep the rich rich and the poor poor. Better yet lets design laws to encourage out of state businesses to make money in MA rather than its own citizens.I've been trying to decipher it all, it seems as though the MMJ requirements are much tighter than Rec., probably because of the medical aspect of it. Do alcohol manufacturers need to pay for govt. mandate background checks and certs for employees? Do tobacco manufacturers? Idk, but I'm guessing no....The state should be concerned with end product safety only, not who I want to hire or their history, that's my problem. Make cultivators test samples for pesticides, molds, etc., before it goes to dispensaries and don't allow cultivators to sell direct to the public, other than that, the state doesn't need to know anything else.
As far as I'm aware, from everything I've been reading, already licensed Mmj dispensaries are allowed to start Rec. sale as of Jan 1 2018, but they need separate retail areas for MMJ/Rec. The state is going to license up to 75 (?) more MMJ dispensaries, which can also sell Rec, by the 4th quarter of 2018. After that the state will determine if more are needed based on demand There's NOTHING in the law regarding Rec. Only dispensaries, everything is tied to the existing/ future MMJ dispensaries.
There's literally thousands of high end, small scale, connoisseur growers, like myself, who saw this as an opportunity to be self employed, or at least supplement income, and we aren't even going to get a chance because the cost is out of the reach of most.
I've looked into starting my own buisness 3 different times, this is the only opportunity I've seen where I can, well should have been able to, do it with no outside investments. There's something wrong with our system when it essential stops people from becoming self employed unless you're already wealthy, or willing to go into debt and be on the hook to other.. neither of which I'm willing to do, or should have to, yay , Murica!

15k + 3k nonrefundable is a drop compared to the 40k + 5k nonrefundable RI wants for their new cultivator license which there are no limits on, in true corrupt RI tax hungry fashion. This license is coming about due to not allowing caregivers to sell excess to dispensaries. They claim its too,unregulated but its obvious theyre mad they arent getting a bigger piece of the pie and now want to charge 45k for a license to do this.
I suspect a lot of RI caregivers will strictly do business in the MA legal market and will,be applying for a lot of those MA licenses.

The bill, as passed, allows for the regular state tax@6.25%, an additional 3.75% on top of that, then towns can impose another 2%, so 12% total, I believe, it's all in the bill. They are already trying to raise the taxes, saying they won't get enough revenue to properly regulate the industry.

Another interesting thing is putting med patients on the defense. Requiring 2 yearly doctors visits at $200 a pop. Requiring essentially MJ stamps at $25 a pop. One tag is good for a plant regardless of stage.
All this adds an extra $1000 in expenses a year for the average medical grower. Talk about fuckibg over the medical,community while,our neighboring states are allowing anyone to,grow.

So 12% on a $200 oz puts it at $224. Not bad even with a $50 tax per oz.
I know i could make money hand over fist selling oz for $150.
So i maintain it is grower greed not state greed

Man I need a rich uncle.
But I know some rich cranberry growers,who have land zoned industrial and have expressed interest in wanting to invest in the legal pot industry.
I need to work up,an estimate and some floorplans of a setup to present them. Perhaps this could be my way into the legal business.

Maths off a little, you need to subtract the perecentage from the total. 12% of 200 is 24, so you'd pay $24 on a $200 sale. You'd have to sell@ $230 to clear $200 after taxes, $202 actually.
There's greed both ways, being still federally illegal, anyone in this buisness still needs to cover there ass, our state protection only goes so far. I can't go any lower, I'm already the lowest price around for the quality I have, I still need to consider possible legal actions and financial consequences. Untill it's 100% legal nationwide, 100, 200, 300+% profit is the game.

I dont know about you but it costs me a little less than $10 per oz not counting labor. Just electrics nutrients and water. Buy nutes on a large scale would drop that.
So,figure 40 for labor that puts each ounce at $50.
$150 per is still 300% profit.

150 is 200% profit @50 cost. First 50 covers your expenses= 0% profit, second 50 =100% profit, third 50= 200% profit.

Right now the tax isn't THAT high. I think it's around 12%... but I think I heard they were talking about upping it to a crazy 50%
Oop. Should have read the rest of the posts before replying.... but yeh. 12% is where we're at. Not too bad.

I hear ya about going into buisness for yerself. That is the dream, isn't it. How much do you think you could make growing your own & selling wholesale to a distributor? Maybe you should look into working for a cultivation center at a head cultivator? In MA here, lawmakers quietly had a meeting and passed the start of their basterdization of our new law by pushin back the date for dispensary licences to begin July 2018 not Jan and they plan to decrease number of legal plants or lawmakers already talking of cutting down and or out homegrows. 200 a year 2x a year for med patients... That's fucked. I had to save a month and a half to get medical. 150 a year is already 1 month next to no meds. That better not happen...
