Are my clones dying/dead?

Hi there,

This is the first time i have had a go at cloning and i am worried about the outcome right now. i took clones of my plants the day they went into flower.

I took about 18 clones and they all looked healthy for the first week or so. then they started deteriorating and getting ill, some worst than others. after about 10 days i took the lid off and touched a few stems. 4 were loose and came straight out. the rest seem to be in place and maybe had some roots but not sure.

I pulled 1 out, the weakest of the genetics that i didn't care about and saw that it had some roots but very small ones. This gives me some hope that the clones are still living, some are very firm in place and when i look down the holes and at the cuts i can see clearly white roots appearing there as shown in the pics...

Some are firmly attached but still seem pretty ill, I am not sure if they will be successful or not. I am on day 13 now with still no roots showing underneath any.... What do you recommend that I do?

Hi there,

the website is still not allowing me to upload pics so i have added them to a zip folder and provided a download link....

my temp is around 21 degrees C and my humidity is a little lower now that I have removed the dome. around 55% or so. did keep them in a humidity dome though and slowly opened throughout the first 10 days.

Yes I used root gel and I am trying to clone underneath an LED light thats about 2 ft away

As you can see in some photos, there are roots on the stems where they were cut or you can see them down in the hole. I do believe there are roots but they just don't look healthy and I am not sure if they will make it...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Clones like warmer climate...i like to have temp around 25c minimum. If they are cool it will take longer to root. Some strains take longer to root. Also depends where you took clones from the plant...i find clones taken from bottom of plant seem to root faster than ones taken near the top or tips of branches.

How old is mother plant? Was is from seed or is it a clone?

Like i said this is the first time i have taken clones so the mothers were all from seed. I planted 9 seeds and grew them out until about 6 weeks veg and then the day i switched to flower i took cuttings. tomorrow it will be exactly 2 weeks but I still can't see roots anywhere except down the hole they were planted but none on the outside of the cubes and they look unhealthy, leaves are dying all over the place but the stems are stuck in the medium for sure. Cuttings were taken from different places on different plants. I tried to take most of it from the bottom anyway seen as this would get the least light going into flower but i did have to cut some stems from the middle in order to get 4 nodes.

I took 18 cuttings but only 13 remain now and i'm pretty sure some of those will die. at least want 1 of each good genetic to live so i can keep those on but i was hoping for at least 9 in total to survive so i could fill out my grow space again and get them all in veg ready. I have a couple extra seeds just in case but I didn't really want to use them, just save the cuttings but they look worst by the day but still alive for now lol.

The only thing i can think of to raise temps would be to turn my extraction fan off for a while to raise the heat from the grow light. i will do this for a bit but I will put it back on at night before i go to bed so its not to risk anything. Hopefully some will still pull through

I tried but AVG said your zip file was a trojan horse so that was that. It's an application, not pics. Are you a cop or just don't know how to make zip files properly? Anyway, you probably left them in the humid air too long, usually only takes about 7 days for rooting.

yeah this is always the problem with uploading files. it always says things are trojans when they are not. the file is safe trust me, but rollitup isn't letting me upload pics directly. it usually does

the clones do not look well and look like most of them are dying to me? but they still have some roots if you look close enough at the holes...?

That's actually normal. They use up the nitrogen and other nutrients from the older leaves until they have roots to absorb more. The growing tips are nice and healthy looking. They'll be fine. Just give em nutrients now, half strength, meaning hydro nutrients.

The clones look like they have lost their internal moisture. Which is why I think your larger laves are yellow and you younger leaves are turning into a cabbage. Just my 2p but I would guess they need more moisture in the prop environment.

Some strains do clone quicker than others though.

Yes i think this was a problem early on. in the first 7 days i pretty much didn't water because the humidity dome was keeping everything nice and moist. then i added in some perlite which in turn is making the media dry more quickly and now i re-moisten the cubes every 2-3 days with a few ml. do you think i should put the propagation hood back on? or is it too late now its been 2 weeks?

Not exactly sure. I just bought the Root IT propagation kit. it was only cheap. came with 24 "Natural Rooting Sponges" as they are advertised

Sorry never tried sponges out as a rooting media. And I see it doesn't come with a heating mat. I usually like my propagators temp to be 80-85 Degrees (27-30 c). You can do it at lower temps but that is the optimal range for fastest rooting in my experience.

Sometimes they take a beating but as long as they survive they'll recover shortly. What often happens to me is the bottom of the stem rotting before roots form. That's the biggest problem that comes up with rooting. Guess maybe I should dip them in a dilute peroxide solution to kill the bacteria/fungus before sticking them.

Thanks! 1 in the bottom right has rooted today after 15 days and the growth is looking much healthier on it now but the rest all still look like they are shutting down... I hope they make it....

Did you transplant them? They're done now, you gotta put em in pots with soil or whatever. If any wilt just put a freezer bag upside down over it until they can take the air.

No i haven't transferred any. only 1 has actually shown roots!! i think the others may still die lol. i thought you were not supposed to transplant until you had a solid root foundation so that they are covering all of the surface? I am still waiting for others to show signs.....

Well as long as they have the beginnings of roots you can transplant, just have to put plastic over them until they grow enough roots that they can take the open air. You can just tug lightly on them and see if they put out or not.
