You dimmer them or what?? Im dzmmy for all that el. tech talk.. I order parts and my buddy set it up.. I need driver for non dimmable cobs.

im using a hlg185 48a to run 4 cxm22 at 50w each but it will go up to ~62.5w each if i crank it up all the way. im using constant amperage. not sure about the constant current drivers.
measured on AC or DC side? that sounds high on the DC side as the driver maxed is ~55-57W per cob (1060 mA@53-53.5V). but yes at 92-94% eff it will pull 240-245W at wall

cobs, im testing my electrical learning here. if i used my 12v 10a dc converter

would i have an adjustable driver for 36-72v chips and up to 900 watts of power?

Hard to say what the efficiency will be. I seemed to get power surges with the 600 watt version of that variable supply. The constant current is not working on my supply and I think a surge may have damaged it. I'll probably buy another to play with, maybe the version with trim pots rather than the digital control. BTW, I was just running 36v COBs with three 12volt computer supplies connected in series.

ive had mixed results with those. i think dedicated led psus are worth it in every regard
Quality LED drivers may cost more initially, but they are more efficient and very reliable. I think of it as an investment, they will probably run for decades.
With 12v power supply feeding a boost converter the efficiency losses add up. I do like the cheap constant current/constant voltage converters for experimenting and testing.

Visajoe, when I connect power to my digital booster the LED flashes from a power surge, even with low power settings or the output turned off. I also have the smaller 250 watt booster you pictured, no surges with that one. This is all getting off topic, maybe I'll start a thread on alternative and experimental drivers.

ya, i dont wanna hog cobs thread, lets fire up a thread for powering cobs with alternative supplies with pros/cons do's and donts. your feedback on digital booster is awesome. for testing or short term use, something like these could work for some folks?

just to expand a little bit, i had a few of those around in an industrial environment for 24V alarm/signaling, so i thought they were cool. so i bought a 400W one to try to run a 3618 light engine out and it wouldnt light it. more like flash>click>flash>click>repeat. it couldnt provide stable voltage even though it was in spec.

i actually have the real deal hlg480-3500 coming this week so we'll see whats up with 400W cobs
