So I've got these buggers growing in 10l freedom (smart) pots. When watering, should i water the whole canopy of the pot evenly? Ie. Not just watering directly on the root ball (where I think it is).

Also is the purpling of my stem in this picture a sign that I'm already over watering? I did give it a tad bit much water on their 2nd day sprouted (only like a bit more than half a shot glass).

I transplanted them today to the 10l pots and it wasnt the smoothest transition. The reason I did this is my taproot had already grown out of the bottom of my styrofoam cup - it was a solid 2 cm out the cup. Luckily I had them suspended in glass cups and the stem was just hanging.

20170518_134531[1].jpg 20170518_134534[1].jpg 20170518_162827[1].jpg They've been there for 3 hours since this picture was taken, so they don't look too bad.

They sprouted on Monday, so today is their 4th day. I was hoping to start giving them Kelpac already, is that advisable? (seaweed root stimulant). [with the above watering situation in mind]

Currently got them under 410w CFL at a distance of about 15cm.

I was hoping on starting them on some kelpac tonight.

Any advice for a first time indoor grower?

Thanks

Everything looks ok to me so far. The purple one the stem is common for small seedlings. As it's roots get established it will uptake more Cal. And mag. Returning the green color to them. I suggest next time that you pop your seeds in a red Solo cup with a couple holes in the bottom. Let the seedling get a nice little rootball on it before you transplant. Going into a large pot at a young age will force the plant to search for the bottom of it's pot so it can know how big to grow. So don't be surprised if it takes a couple of weeks in those 10L to see any rapid growth their roots must reach the bottom of the pot before it starts any rapid new growth. Another thing with very small plants in large pots is sometimes it is hard to tell when they need water because there is so much medium to root ratio. Keeping it in a smaller pot until established then transplanting will make the grow progress way faster.

Second thing. Try not to ever over water. Not even once. I know you mentioned you might have all ready. If your in dirt. Get used to picking up the pots to see how much water is in them. I wait until my pot feels like they are full of air instead of dirt before I water. I have no schedule as to say I don't water exactly every 3 day or every other day. I check each plant each day by lifting the pots. I also rotate them 180 degrees during my water check.

3rd thing. You will much happier with results if you can get your hands on at least 1 his lamp over the. You can go with something cheap offline. I know where you can get a 600w. For 105 dollars with everything included. Plug and play. There are also cheap alternatives. Re wired older MH lights for shops work well. There are also shop lights that can run MH HPS lights just by switching bulbs. I have awesome results mixing my MH 400w shop lights in with my HPS lights. And they are cheap 20 bucks at the junk yard. Might have to re wire it to run off 120v but it's simple. The hardware store also sells lower wattage HPS lights. 75w. 150w 175w 225w. Just ask the clerk for a HPS outdoor light for your tall garage. He will take you right to them. CFLS are great for what they are. Ive used them to veg for years l. They are on my clones right now. But for flower you will much happier with HID results compared to cfl.

Any questions just pm me or reply.

Cheers and Happy Growing!

This plant has been in a Solo cup it's whole life. Seedling 6 weeks. Today it's going in a 3 gallon plastic nursery bag. Then 4 more weeks in veg. Then flower. As you can see it's been topped and super cropped. It was literally all most 2 feet tall in the solo cup. Now you don't have to do it exactly like me. Just some way that works good for you. Just so you have an idea. Leave it in a small container until you notice new growth everyday. Then transplant. Nameste!

Eish, well the deep has already been done. The tap root was already growing out the bottom of the solo cup though, couldnt exactly let it keep growing in that surely?

Most people do a 4week/8week, but I was planning a 6w/8w anyway. Will 6w be sufficient to develop in size?

How badly are we talking about being set back?

Thanks!

Guessing a week at least maybe a lil longer. Like I said the plant in my previous post is 6 weeks in a Solo cup it has a root poking about a half in out the bottom as well. Not saying you have to go 6 weeks but at least let them get to 3 sets of true leaves. That way when you transplant it has plenty of size to rapidly find the bottom if it's new pot. Notice this plant is 24 in tall in the cup but the rootball isn't that large. It has at least 8 tops (I think lol) so it will only grow it's roots so large in the cup you.

Shit you can wait until it's on its 3rd set if leaves. Then the day after you water roll the cup in your hand and flip it over to get a good look at the roots. That's what I just did lol. Then just put the cup back on.

Okay awesome. I guess this is a learning curve!

I am considering giving some Kelpac (seaweed route stimulant), could I ask you about this as well?

I am growing in promix, so there is a nutrient base.

Blessings to you my friend! - Feel free to check out my grow journal as well where I will be posting updates of the ladies as things progress. https://www.rollitup.org/t/white-widow-x-ak47-afghan-kush-1st-grow-mr-ger.940643/

Cheers!
Mr. GER
I will check out your journal for sure!

On the nute I personally don't give any for 3 weeks from seed unless it shows a nitrogen def. If it's green and healthy I just water it. I'm in day 14 of flower right now and I haven't given nutes in 3 weeks. Just water and my girls are loving it. A lot of times less is more with the is sweet girl we all love. That being said I have seen many people on this site use seaweed extract and things like teas and what not early on but my personal opinion is no nutes unless they show signs of needing them. And never any nutes until week 3 espically after a transplant into different medium.

I also suggest research obviously. But I will all ways shoot straight and I would never tell you to do anything I wouldn't do to my plants and mine are my lively hood.
Nameste!

I'll post pics of my girls. 20 days or so no nutes 15 days in flower today. (I think lol. Could be off a day or 2. Pretty burnt. )

Plants look OK. My complaint is with pot size. You will be wasting several weeks waiting for the roots to first grow out into the side of the pot. You won't see hardly any above-ground growth for weeks. It isn't too late to transplant the seedlings into 8-10 oz. solo cups. Will save you a ton of time, eh? Otherwise, I guarantee we will see a post in 3-4 weeks to the effect of --"How Come My Seedlings Are So Slow?"

Good luck, BigSteve.

Yo. I took your guys advice and transplanted them to smaller pots.

Any tips? What can I expect from here?

Ps. Thanks for the help. I am still prone to knee-jerk reactions (like a rookie) trying to learn. Blessit

It might be a good idea to make up a couple of braces ahead of time in case you need them. The braces are to keep new seedlings from tipping over. I buy 12-inch wooden skewers at WalMart and wrap a pipecleaner around the skewer. Danger time for tipovers is when you water. So have your braces handy and try not to water too much by dumping a whole lot right at the roots. You can even do the first weeks or so watering with a spray bottle. Finally, once you get the pots placed under the light where you want them, try not to move them. You will see posts from guys asking how come they got "swirly" looking leaves on the young plants. That swirly look comes from the plant rotating to get as much light as possible. If you don't move the plant it doesn't have to swirl around looking for the light.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Good job. Now just give them time. Make sure there are holes in the cups. Don't overwater. Once you see rapid new growth. That is when they have reached the bottom of the cup. I usually let them get to the 4th node in my cups. Then from there to their final home in 3 gallon bags. If they go crazy in the 3 gallon they go into a 5 a week before flip. If they are just normal they stay in the 3 gallon. Container size matters but not the most important thing. I'll include a few pics. This was a couple days ago. Plant literally growing in 5 in of dirt......
Good job. Happy Growing!

Thanks for the help guys, you got me through a rough patch. The info and pics were vital in my understanding. I realise I was being way too pedantic about things

Will post updates of the plants in my grow journal. Blessings!

After all my years growing. I still don't get all you youg'uns following a "timed" sched.

NO plant finish's "on a set time base!" Way to many variables! I always run long for the highest quality.

For vegging, it's pop/clone to Solo's to 1 gallons to 3 gallons. Strain dependent, it's time to go to 5 or 7 gal pots when the plant is at my flip height. Into that final pot and it gets 8-10 days for root expansion, and into the bloom room it goes....

She then runs till I think it's ready to harvest - PERIOD! No time like the RIGHT time!

Thanks for the reply mate.

I completely understand. Being inexperienced with indoor growing I thought it would be useful to just get a general time frame in mind, so that I could try & track my plants progress (to an extent).

I'll definitely focus on what you said and base my switch / harvest on actual results though, so thanks for giving me that confidence!

I'm just a rookie indoor grower trying to get some guidance, and I appreciate your assistance!
