Joke Not: Canada opens Stadium for migrants from US

Montreal is temporarily opening its Olympic Stadium as a shelter to host a sudden increase
in asylum seekers arriving from the US.

More than 4,300 people have crossed into Canada seeking refugee status since January.

The majority of those have crossed into the province of Quebec, straining resources of

government and community groups.

The stadium received the request for space last Friday.

Canada has seen a significant increase in the number of people crossing illegally

into the country between official points of entry and seeking asylum.

Over 3,300 people crossed into Quebec between 1 January and 30 June.

Manitoba and British Columbia have also both seen an influx of hundreds of asylum seekers.

Over 3,000 asylum seekers have crossed illegally into Quebec from the US since January

Most of those who cross illegally have been quickly apprehended by the

Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other law enforcement.

Once in custody, they are identified, searched and screened. If they are eligible to make

an asylum claim, they are allowed entry and referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been under pressure to do more to secure the border

amid concerns about the influx.

Calls have been made to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement, under which

refugee claimants are required to request protection in the first safe country they arrive in.

It is a policy meant to better manage refugee claims and to avoid so-called "asylum shopping"

between countries.

But it is also among the reasons the asylum seekers are avoiding trying to come to Canada

at official ports of entry.

So far, Ottawa is standing behind the agreement, which came into effect in 2004.

Quebec officials will be holding a press conference on Thursday.

Asylum from what? Refugees from where?

Are you trying to say these are US citizens, @vostok?

As flawed as America is, do you think it's necessary to make it sound like they are citizens of ours, when they're not?

For shame.

Whether they are US citizens or not is irrelevant and misses the whole point. That piece of shit Trump and his policies have scared the crap out of these people to the point they'll take a chance on Canada. Enough of them that we have to rustle up extra space to house them while they're processed through our system. That's the point of the post. Get your shit together down south and we won't have to take on more refugees or find temporary space to host them.

We citizens are trying to make our government listen to us. It's grown increasingly deaf over over the last 40 years.

It only responds to money anymore, apparently.

I'm sorry you feel this way..I'm just asking a question.

You make it look as if people are leaving this country in droves, which is misleading.

Misleading others often times leads to trouble.

In your home country it's called propaganda..leave it there..we don't want it.

And yes, I do comment on your posts- it's an open forum..you don't know what kind of friend I am to RIU. You may not comment on this.

It is true that those refugees come here first, don't think the United States can or will help them and then move on to a country they feel will be more sympathetic to their needs.

Personally, I think that's a black mark on our country.

A lot of people still like Trump currently I don't like him but he can turn that around. .

Hundreds of migrants are crossing the border illegally each day following tips on Facebook and YouTube.

The Canadian military is building a camp to house the growing number of refugees crossing the US border, officials have said.

The camp would house up to 500 asylum seekers in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec, near Plattsburgh, New York.

The construction begins about a week after Montreal turned its Olympic Stadium into a shelter for refugees arriving from the US.

More than 3,300 people crossed into Quebec between 1 January and 30 June.

The military-built camp would house hundreds of asylum seekers in heated tents fitted with flooring and electricity

while they wait for their refugee applications to be processed, said a statement from the military.

Patrick Lefort, a spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

there is currently a backlog of asylum seekers at Roxham Road, a popular crossing point near Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec.

It will take about two or three days for Canada Border Services to process the 700 asylum applications.

In the meantime, there is no place for them to stay.
