Edward Scissorhands?

Hey all,

Doing my first grow with 2 Indica Feminized Purple Kush plants. I've had a couple setbacks mainly due to laziness in prepping my 4x4 grow box (haven't put the white plastic down, setup the exhaust fan) and that darn cat. He ate a bunch of leaves early in the seedling stage that delayed growth. I'm running 250W. Humidity seems to indicate it's in the 70% range most days. Doesn't feel humid since I'm growing in the garage (in an insulated wood box, but winter is approaching). This means outside the box is getting to be around 5 degrees, but I can maintain 20-30 with my heater/dehumidifier running. Anyhow, today in the middle of week 4 I decided to do some trimming. I saw all the big leaves on branches of their own and thought...I better cut those so the nutrients aren't wasted on them and can go to the buds. I feel there is still a lot of leaves left, but I'm not sure since so many online photos show different looking plant growth.

1) Could someone let me know if I cut too many leaves off? I counted 50 leaves I cut LOL. :hump: I actually got a bit trigger happy you could say. I was holding back from cutting even more.

2) Also, is it ok to knuckle/super crop branches during flowering? I made a scrog that was supposed to be setup long ago, but was undecided on my approach to setting it up. If I scrog now and bend and manipulate the branches, am stressing the plant further causing more growth delays right?

3) Are the leaves good for anything at this stage? Since they're not flushed, I can't eat them, but can the little amount of resin seen using a loupe be used for anything? I assume these are compost waste.

These are growing in coco as well and each get a NDF 5mL/L A&B solution each day now. I hope to finish the grow room renos today or tomorrow. (shelves, white plastic up, exhaust fan, 2'x4' scrog).

I do not understand why you cut off what you cut off. Typically you would lollypop a plant like that about a week before you enter 12/12. They are stretching due to lack of light already and I fear your buds wont be very dense in the end. :\ I hope I am wrong.

the fan leaves are the solar panels of the plant, you want a full canopy so none of the light is wasted and trim out the junk below that isnt going to become anything worth the plants energy.

Nooo lol. Where are the positive, "Yes, that's exactly what you need to trim" comments ha ha. I think my buds will be smaller too, but I had some issues starting these plants which lead to the stretching. As mentioned, first grow so dumb mistakes will happen. So much varying info online too. Now I know for next grow not to go ape shit with the razorblade. I'll post an update in 4-5 weeks. At least I'm not the poster who wrote, "12 Weeks of Flowering and no buds - Help" :)

Thought I was doing less than videos like these

I thought you wanted the light to reach through the canopy and not be blocked out by the top. There are a number of videos/growers advising a thinning trim during week 3 to improve growth. It was my understanding that yes these are the solar panels, but they are also using the energy to grow their branches bigger, and there are no buds coming from those branches. I'm assuming my small leaves on the branches with bud will now grow bigger and be the "new" solar panels for the plant. Thanks for your help.

I don't know how old yours is but I will not be trimming anymore off mine and I'm on day 34 (especially fan leaves) I've just put her in flowering now, I feel she is thriving.

Here's what I have done so far
https://www.rollitup.org/Journal/dmxkk17.979759/

She is an indica dominant hybrid.

It's my first grow but I feel that I'm doing well and maybe you could get a couple of pointers from my journal on your next grow if mine succeeds

:)

Mine are mid-week of Week 4 flowering. Looking online at buds of this growth stage, I seem to be about a week behind. I'm ok with that if this is a correct calculation because I had my cat chew on both plants on 2 different occasions, and I don't have the perfect grow environment setup yet.

Says I don't have permission to your journal when I copy/pasted the URL.

I think I have fixed it so you can see :)

If i may add any advice at all i would tell you to try to learn to prune your plants to look like something a giraffe would munch on...

example..

Totally agree. Know a good accurate guide to do that? Also, your plant growth is completely different than mine. Are you saying that's only because you pruned your plant continuously in VEG and Flower?

Day 20 I wasn't happy with how she looked (My days are counted from when she first popped out of the soil)

Day 22 I pruned her, which is image 2.

I topped her on day 28 after she recovered from the initial pruning.

Pruned her again on day 30, plus I added more soil

We are on day 37 and I have bent some big fan leaves out of way and tied a big loop wich goes around the the top of the 4 lower outer nodes. This is so that they bend upwards and receive as much light as possible, Ill take a pic of my handwork when she's awake again because I did this after taking the last image
Yes so you're in VEG, but I'm in Flower so I feel we're talking about 2 different things now right. I'm on Day 71 of total growth. I topped mine around Day 30 of VEG which is why you can see the 2 branch split. Mine just stretched a lot at all stages of growing it seems. I followed the guides of people saying light should be 36" from canopy.

Very true..

I'm a CFL grower so I keep my lights at a distance of 6 inch max

I started under a small 40W CFL curly bulb when I first got the seeds going. They stretched a lot . About 2" on one day and this was after I re-transplanted them into deeper soil from the first stretching they did. I didn't know what to buy at the time and just wanted to start growing them. That's likely why mine look so skinny and tall now is my guess. I also struggled with temps and humidity over time. When I built my grow box from plywood (4x4x8') it was showing high humidity of 70%+ and temps were low 20's and even 10 degrees on some nights in my garage. I then increased the temp, started running the dehumidifier 24hrs but couldn't get it to get below 50% humidity. The temp was around mid 20's though. Now I got the plants back in my PC room. Temp is around 25 degrees and humidity is about 60% (not running dehumidifier). They look totally healthy as far as colour, no bugs, or disease. I have no idea how much stress I've placed on my plants with environment changes though, but it's mainly why they look like they do. Seems like cutting all the fan leaves will add stress to the flowering stage I'm in now, but I'm recording photos and details daily....including suggestions from here.

Pic of the grow room being built on it's side. 4" insulated walls on wheels. Garage air is around 5-10 degrees so I haven't even setup an exhaust fan as I'd be sucking cold air in and venting all the heat in seconds.
