Please DO NOT upgrade to Windows 8, you will hate yourself if you do. PM me for assistance if needed, I am a retired technician. Essentially, if you can break it, I can fix it.
I've been building my own machines since '88 so no slouch in that dept either. Wife has Win8.1 on her laptop and I blocked windows from sneaking in Win10 on her like has happened to so many folks. I have a pirate disk with all the versions of Win7 on it so am trying to find a decent motherboard to upgrade my failing one, two leaky capacitors so far, and do a clean install on it in a spare box then transplant it into my good one on my desk.
I'm actually doing a little side business cleaning up people's machines that are all plugged up with malware from all the stupid social media sites and the "free" games they like to download "free" as well. Such sheeple.
Quite happy to cough up $50 to get a machine that works like new again until they plug it with crap again and come back for another clean up. I warn them but they don't listen. lol
Win7/8 can be made to work and look like my beloved XP Pro so I'll be tweaking my install to be like that. Best damn version of windblow$ ever!
Another reason for the upgrade is I've never been able to get my Blu-Ray burner to work in XP nor have I been able to get my new Android phone to communicate with it but works just fine with the wife's lappy.
PS: Do you know of any good bootable utilities for installing on a thumb drive that would have anti-virus/malware/spyware cleanup tools that can be updated? I use Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes and a couple others to clean up crap. Crap Cleaner too on new machines to get rid of all the free extras they come with. AutoRuns to turn off all the bootloading junk and Process Explore to find the hidden processes running in the background.
Out of the loop a bit with Win10 and newer, free utilities so any tips there would be appreciated. I have an older Geek Squad disk to get into low level repairs as a last resort but couldn't save the storage drive that Linux Mint borked on me. Lot of stuff on that 1T drive I'd liked to have recovered but I think it's past recovery now so will reformat it and use it for the Win7 install as it's onl been used for a couple months before it got buggered up. I have it's twin in the comp I'm using now.
