My dad is still grinding his own flours by hand, buck wheat, corn, rice, millet...

Makes for a mean sourdough waffle or chili rellenos, yum.

We still can and freeze beans, corn, pickles, tomato juice etc. Not as much. Just me and my wife. I find the older I get the less we eat. The grandkids though, dam. Go through a chocolate cake in a day. Spaghetti by the box. It got to where we can't reliably raise fruit in my area. Between freezes and hail it tough. I gave fruit up. Except blackberries and strawberries. Hail last year wiped a bunch out as well. Seems like the weather is inconsistent. We made a couple 15" pizzas for dinner one chicken bacon ranch and one cheese bacon deluxe. Home made crust and sauce. $10 max in both total. I doubt if it was $7. All eaten as well as cake etc. Mom and dad both work so we have them over a lot.

You are doing a good turn by helping mom and dad out with the meals. Finding time to cook can be the hardest part of putting good food on the table under a budget. Especially in urban areas, time to cook those meals is valuable too.

I'm not criticizing terps if his food budget seems high to me. Sometimes people trade off cost and convenience for time, especially when both parents are working, are making good money and don't keep an eye on the food budget. The rat race is getting more and more intense and people have to make trade-offs where they must. On the other hand, his insistence that feeding a family of four well for less than 30 bucks a day is unthinkable seems a bit stretched, even in these busy times.

I agree. When we shop we watch people. Watch what they buy. My wife and I both worked for years and it was tough. We were far from fast food so it helped. I worked and ran a business during the day. Second shift factory work. She worked days. We were very fortunate. I hope everyone is as fortunate to have a life you can enjoy no matter what. I make the grandkids work. The set the table etc. The oldest likes to cook. No slackers here.

We buy in bulk a lot. That helps.

We can a lot of food. Everything from vegetables to chicken.

We try our best to cook and actually have a meal at the table every evening. I know it can be hard but its good for the family.
