Can I use 1000w hps in a 4x2?

I have a 400w right now but I feel like it’s not doing the job. My tent is relatively small though, it’s a 4x2. I’d like to move my 400 to the veg tent which is a 3x3 and put a 600 or 1000w in the flower tent. Will the 1000w bleach my plants in that small space? Is it too much light?

I think most 2x4 tents are wayyy to low for a 1000w hps mine is only like 5ft tall and most ive seen is 6ft unless you get the 2 foot extention not to mention the heat would be crazy

If you can control the heat and keep the appropriate distance between bulb and canopy I don't see why it wouldn't work. Air cooled hoods and great ventilation would be a must. Also if you swapped veg and flower tents the 3x3 has a larger square footage and would have less intensity of light per square foot of grow space.

I had a 1k in a 5x5x5 box for years but
I was in a nice cool basment :)

2x4 as the others have said is going to be a hard one .
Only way is if you got mucho fan or good ceiling hieght

Mabey a cool tube?

okay so the tent is in the basement. it stays pretty cool right now during winter. and the 1000w system im thinking of getting is dimmable as well and has an air cooled hood. Right now I'm actually having a hard time keeping temps up in there. I figure I might as well go full on this purchase because i purchased a 400w last time and everyone was telling me that 400w in a 3x3 was plenty of light. I found it to be mediocre at best. I'm always having to arrange the plants under the light tightly. maybe because i bought the apollo horticulture ballast and it's not as bright as it claims? This one too is off brand, its the VIVOSUN 1000w. I bought a carbon filter from vivosun though and it works great. They seem legit. I guess I can always return it if I'm not happy right?

i'd go with a 600 instead a 1K is overkill. 125watts/sq ft. over 80 w/sq ft is the point of diminishing returns.

or buy a 315 w cmh and use it in the 3x3 tent. it's perfect for a 3x3.

yeah i have a good fan. maybe i should throw it into the 3x3 tent. I just have some cfls in there right now and my vegging plants. its upstairs though. its too tall for the basement.

A 3x3 is 9 sq ft, more then a 2x4 @ 8 sq ft.

If the 315 is good in a 3x3, it is fine in a 4x4.

Maybe just get a new bulb and clean your glass (if you have any)?

My guess is a 1k is gonna burn your plants in a 2x4. Too much light is one of most common errors.......

alright well i just ordered it. hope its good. 1000w dimmable to 750 and 600. so worst case scenario ill dim it to 600. then if i ever need to i can use the full potential of the light. only a bit more $$ for 1000w so why not.

I'm running a 2x4 and a 3x3 also, let us know how your lights work out. I had a 600w in my 3x3 for a grow, seemed a good balance for the space. I have heat issues so I'm running 100% COB lights now. You might try the 1000w running at 600w in your 3x3, and then run the 400w in the center of the 2x4 with some supplemental COBs running on either side. That would be a killer setup.

How many plants do you run in each tent?

That would be a nice setup. Right now i have 8 smaller plants in 2 gallon containers flowering in the 2x4 because luckily enough on my first cloning attempt ever all my clones survived except like three. So now I have too many plants. In my 3x3 ive got a sea of clones getting too big for their containers and some autoflowers.

I was thinking of putting the new light in the 3x3 as well. That actually used to be my flower tent but i just moved and my shit got switched lol.

I was gonna get some leds but they were too expensive.

I've done grows with lots of 2gal pots packed into tents when I've been testing seeds. For me it's great for sampling lots of different strains (or pheno hunting), and I suppose it can be made into a sort of SOG, but overall my preference is fewer bigger plants.

I'm using up some regular seeds this run, and since I have to sex them and toss the boys I'm starting with more than I want or need. I'm going to pack 9 plants in 3 gallon pots onto a single tray in my 3x3, I couldn't fit that many in with individual trays under the pots (I'm growing in soil). After the boys are culled, I'll see what I'm left with. My goal in the end is to just run 4 in the 3x3 and let them hopefully get big.

The biggest challenge will be seeing how long I can veg them crowded together like that, before I flip them (the idea being to give the 4 I end out keeping the most chance to really establish themselves). After this I'm probably going back to just buying clones, maybe some time I'll try feminized seeds, haven't gone that route yet. In my 2x4 I'm running two clones in 7 gallon pots under a scrog, with any luck I can get a decent harvest from them.

The price of COBs are coming down, and if you make your own it's not too bad. I've built, rebuilt, and added onto mine several times over the last few years, so the cost was spread out over time. I'm sure I have a crazy amount invested at this point... honestly I don't want to know how much.

like others said, u can run a 1k in 2x4.. as long u can control the heat.. problem is, that w/ nearly all rectangular tents, the Air cooled openings are on the wrong ends.. in yur 2x4, the bulb should be centered and orientated perpendicular to the long side, not parallel. It would take some clever ingenuity on yur part to make it air cooled, and you'd still need a nice exhaust fan anyway.

a 315 is just right for a 2x4. u can run it open air, as long as u have a small desk fan for circulation at plant top level, and above the lamp have a 400+ cfm vent fan.. attach a carbon filter and no light leaks..

It's been my experience that a 315 is not ideal for a 1 sq meter area .. i've found that it takes roughly 1 and half 315's to accurately cover a square meter.. That's three 315 lamps over every 2sq meters. To me, a 315 is equivalent to 450 or 500 watts, like somewhere in-between a 400/430 hps and a 600 hps, in what it will yield you, per m2.

. But 315's have their advantages, u can hang them much closer and they run cooler than a 600. Just know, that if your trying to calculate watts, a 315 will draw 350-390w from yur wall, not 315 watts. Even still, 1170w (390 x3) every two m2 is less than the 1300+ watts that a pair of 600's would be drawing.. It's been my experience that a single 315 does not have the coverage to crush a 3x3 like a 600 does, but a 315 outperforms a 400 or 430. In a tent with reflective walls, running plants wall-to-wall, the difference would be even more pronounced.

If u acquired one more tent, or something, u could start up rotations. Keep the autos in yur veg under 24/0, that will be like bonus weed inbetween yur 12/12 runs. a single 2x4 will feed two 3x3 tents..
