Bring the backlash here. Growing in cow manure ONLY!

A buddy acquired some land this last year up in Shasta County and we have been prepping and planning on growing there this summer. Its time we fill our smart pots and get these babies in the ground this weekend. Hes an old timer from Fiji who has been around MaryJane for a few years. He insists on growing in straight up cow manure, no soil or natural dirt mixed in. I told him hes crazy and that the clones will fry up in a matter of weeks, which then makes this whole grow a waste of my time and money. But hes so hardheaded he doesnt want to believe it and his reasoning is "Ive been doin it this way for years"... (No way hes ever done it, hes being a cheap f*cker).

Im posting this to get all the feedback possible to this dumb idea so i can show him this and if he decides to proceed in this route then i can walk away knowing its not my problem anymore. Hey, if it does work, let me know so i can shut up and continue working.

Release the wrath of grow knowledge.

P.S. the natural dirt of our property is the red clayish type dirt you see down in Redding... (not grow approved i assume)
Also the manure he wants to use is those basic white/yellow steer manure bags you can find at Lowes.

Thanks for your guys help.

Not what i would call ideal. You want more air in the soil, yes this will have a ton of nitrogen an the plants may be alright, but its not how i would do it. Ive seen people plant straight into fresh worm castings, but again, not how i would do it.

You can buy bricks of coco coir at those big box stores for really cheap, like 2.50? Makes like 1 cubic foot of media i think. Mix that with a bag of manure, and some local soil in a hole in the ground, plant into that and let us know how it goes. Even of just for 1 of em. I bet that will outyield the rest by a lot.

o_O Dude it's a plant, not a fuckin mushroom! It's a complete waste of a perfectly good start. WTF roflmfas! Thanks I needed that one this morning:eyesmoke:
Haha i knew RIU would enjoy this story.
Ive grown my small personal crops in my little 4x4 tent and my little 6 plant 15g pot back yard grows for a few years now. Ive spent numerous hours here just reading for a few years now, occasional posting, never a big grow like were about to do, but I know enough to know that straight manure is not the way to go.

I just want him to bask in the humiliation.

Manure from fiji may be differant than manure here. The sun being hotter there may age it quicker. A well aged manure, and the cows eating good food will make a huge differance possibly. Cows here are probably not treated or fed as well as fiji cows. Then the manure is probably not aged as well or in the same conditions as he is used to. Id hate to say he hasent done this, this way, and loved the results. Because i dont know him. But who knows if you can even find something comparible to what he is used to.

I wouldn’t put a seedling straight into that but I’m sure it will work for something well started, just not ideal. At the very least, mix 50/50 Peat Moss/Manure. Big Peat Moss bales are pretty cheap... I’d be adding Perlite too lol

My turn to chime in ....lol
So it is the most amazing thing to grow in EVER. The hay that is naturally in it makes for the most amazing drainage. Many growers use straight manure to grow in. They are the ones who get 5+ pounds a plant (given that there is lots of root room)
now mind you I live in northern Wisconsin and can pull these off so in cali you could do even betterreceived_10154625819057263.jpegreceived_10154625819117263.jpegreceived_10154625819162263.jpeg

Yes sir I did! ;) just amended it like you would normal soil (leave out worm castings since it's already loaded with red wigglers) and fed the soil tea to keep the micro beasties happy lol (mostly black strap molasses)

Geesh Girl, ya gonna start making some of us feel a lil inadequate LOL:bigjoint: But really, ok I'm going to have to try this on a much smaller scale. Still got a spot left in my blackberry patch and I know the neighbors next door won't mind if I grab a few five gallon bucket of dried cow cakes. Out of there pasture. I have extra cuttings so I'm gonna try this shit with one in say a 20 gallon hole with amended cow patties, I just gotta see it for myself:eyesmoke::peace:
