Good Day

I am new to growing and i am looking at getting a 1000w hps/mh kit from amazon, but also seeing the led lights,

Bestva
Viparspectra
Higrow
King Led

And so on, i have some reviews that say some them are good not as great as an hps but like a 600w Viparspectra they say can be atleast close to the same as a 600w hps not sure if that is true.

Unfortunately i can not get that brand shipped to my country South Africa, only Bestva and Higrow and King led and some of the others, my budget unfortunately do not allow me to buy the more expensive led grow lights.

Should i rather buy 2 Bestva 1200w reflector series leds or should i buy a yield labs 1000w mh/hps kit with relfector?

Then i have a 3m sqaure area that i can use to grow in, wont use the whole area buy can use it if neccasary, should i do a soil grow or hydro grow?

Thanks

Please don't do that to yourself. The sub-$1500 LEDs that claim to match a 1K HPS are liars, and the people who give them good reviews have never grown under HPS and don't know what they're missing.

No joke - here is a recent thread where a guy said cheap LEDs were killing HPS... see every single response FMI.

That's just not correct. I'd never buy any of the LEDs mentioned in the first post, but top quality LED is available under $1500.
If you want to know about LED, just ask in the LED section! ;-)

For those that can DIY, Samsung and Bridgelux strips are the hot ticket these days. They can be built for well under $200.

A few of the best LED....

Forget blurple, white light is where it's at!

Help me understand this... a 1K HPS, and those brands of LEDs, are all around the $200-300 mark on Amazon... Do you recommend someone needing the output of a 1K HPS with $300 to invest should use LEDs?

You should ask for recommendations over in the LED section. I think @ANC is from your country. https://www.rollitup.org/f/led-and-other-lighting.124/page-3

EDIT: If you're new to growing, I suggest starting with a much smaller area, then go bigger as you gain experience.

I like Hempy buckets, sort of in between soil and hydro. It's easy and works very well. There's a drain hole 50mm (2") from the bottom, with perlite up to there, the rest is usually about 70% perlite and coco, or other water retaining medium. Feed it with water/nutrients mix until you get something like 10-20% run-off out the drain hole, and your done. Almost impossible to over/under water. Just do some searches, and have a look here... https://www.rollitup.org/t/world-of-hempy.546006/

It's going to take over $500 to equal 1k HPS, BUT, LED is much more efficient, so there are real savings on electricity, especially if it saves on air conditioning.

So I get it now... every other day the same question is posted here and I see why it's a running joke...kinda like bill murry in groundhog day...lol
Exactly! Almost every day it seems this is asked by 2 new members. Then we try to explain. Half of those people get mad and start called people with experiance stupid and uneducated. It's a endless cycle.

I decided to go for the yield labs 1000w hps/mh set from amazon , basicly shipping is killing me and import costs to south africa working out around 600$ to get this to me eventhough the set is not so expensive , the shipping and import costs is basicly the same price as the light lol. Thanks for all the replies, at least i did not buy one of those cheap leds, hopefully will be able to get a bigger better led in the future

Thanks will do but only starting with my grow october month somewhere just doing all the needed research so long, i like to prepare myself, i have gotten around the shipping costs a bit on amazon by choosing a different combo with different reflector to use, it seems like it is the reflector type that i chose that makes the import and shipping cost so high, so now im maybe opting for a 1.5mx1.5mx2m grow tent as well for the 1000w hps/mh kit and 2 extra bulbs for backup, but only thing is only bulbs it seems that are in the price range of yield labs that i can import to south africa is ipower not so sure how good they are but they are just for backup purposes for now. Thanks

IMO, iPower is one of the better cheaper brands. I have a backup ballast made by them. Only used once to make sure it worked, but iPower is working to establish a name for themselves so I expect they will back their products.

I wonder if you would find it more affordable to get a simple cool tube, and fabricate a larger reflector (if that's what you want) with locally sourced materials?

Thanks i actually checked that option out 2 but if i buy the balast and bulb and so on without reflector alone on amazon even then it will cost more then the whole kit cost, and i stuff is so overpriced here in south africa if i want to buy a 1000w ballast this side it costs R4600 that is 346$ that is just for the ballast.

gthydro is the one shop and futurama the other shop, the other shops just sell smaller stuff mostly some of them bigger stuff

I've used Viparspectra, Optic LED and Spectrum King, and they all worked fine. I'd take any of them over an HPS.
