I tried a winter grow last year, but I planted too late. Seeds were started on new year's day, and flowering didn't start until March. What cold we had really screwed things up, for a couple weeks I would cover the plants with a tarp and put a heat lamp in with them. All in all, it wasn't worth the extra effort, especially when I only had one female out of 6 plants that made it to floweringI've grown through the winter the last two years. Two years ago I had two nights down to 25F in January. Caused some damage, but didn't kill anything. This past January I had a week in the 20's with two nights down to 16F. That killed everything. I'm hoping last year was the outlier, not the year before.
