You see, there is this thing called gravity. When one steps, trips or is pushed into thin air, 9 stories up, there is nothing to balance the downward force applied by gravity.

The above is based upon Newton's law of gravity. Einstein's theory works too but it's harder to explain. Both are adequate to explain the resultant mess that appears 9 stories below the window.
