This Conservative opinion magazine was originally owned by News Corp. While it has never been profitable, in 2006, the then owner Rupert Murdoch scoffed at suggestions he would stop publication. It played too import a role in the Neo Conservative Movement. Two days ago, the now owner, Phil Anschutz(The Anschutz Corporation) announced he was ceasing publication.
From the early days when the founders, Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes were the editors, they didn't hesitate to criticize both sides of the aisle. While this didn't make GOP leaders happy, they never pushed to have it closed. But from the start, the Weekly Standard said Candidate D Trump was unfit for office. They never changed their opinion after he was elected.
As the New York Times piece puts it. . . .
"This week, Anschutz and McKibben murdered The Weekly Standard, the conservative opinion magazine that Anschutz owned. They didn’t merely close it because it was losing money. They seemed to have murdered it out of greed and vengeance."
