Saugeen Shores police charged two parents regarding a mishap in which children needed medical treatment after eating THC-infused gummy candies.

Police said in a news release that a man and woman are charged with two counts of failing to provide the necessaries of life and one count of possession of illicit cannabis.

Police learned on April 13 about a concern for the wellbeing of children at a Port Elgin residence. Police and paramedics helped provide medical care to the children there.

Police determined the kids found “improperly stored THC ‘Gummies’” in the home and ate them, “leading to a medical emergency,” the release said. Bruce Grey Child and Family Services was notified and continue to care for the children, police said.

THC is tetrahydrocannaboinol, the ingredient in marijuana which produces a high. Though limited possession of pot is legal now, possession of manufactured products infused with THC including gummies, cannabis candy and brownies is still illegal.

The release said any child who inadvertently ingests marijuana and related products or any other drug should be monitored and taken to medical help.

Also, the charges seem a little harsh, fail to provide necessaries of life? That ain't gonna look good on a resume...

Classic example of the harshness of the new reality, how many time do kids get into the parent liquor? I think everyone has! And when it happens, they don't rush the kids off for medical treatment, You send em off to bed to sleep it off, and then ground them. Nobody gets charged, especially with something so ominous sounding...

What was the medical emergency?...seizures?....stop breathing?....violent outbursts?....unconsciousness?....all very serious medical emergencies....hmmmm...no mention....i guess it will come in the stats...lol...

So what did they actually do medically for these kids? sounds like a quick look and send them home ok.
Of course lots of vague info. As per usual.
I've come to realize that these stories that bash cannabis but have no real info to back it up are just more reefer madness. They mention the word cannabis or weed or pot and then don't explain fuck all. because there is nothing to tell.
The media is rampant with this stuff. Barely half stories.
Check this one out. VERY tragic. A locally loved and admired lady killed by an impaired driver. Super Tragic. So last eve they explain that this man has pot in his car. He is being charged with impaired driving. He was impaired by a drug but the police won't say what drug. Now that sounds quite suspicious to me. But yet they mention he had weed.
Why won't they say it was weed. I say because it wasn't weed...he just had some near him.

Seriously though. What was the " medical emergency " and what " medical care " was provided?
Don't get me wrong I am not ok with kids eating their parents edibles. But this type of bullshit reporting is ridiculous. Funny how they didn't mention that if the kids hadda drank their parents booze or popped their pills they very well could be dead instead of just really fuckin stoned.

Punishment does not fit the crime therefore it's unjust. Action should be taken but make it proportional to the alcohol equivalent of kids getting into mom and dads liquor.

Wow! Port Elgin. I use to have a cottage one town over in Southampton. Jesus. I don’t think that’s failing to provide the necessities of life. Seems a little drastic.

How is that not providing the necessities of life? Were the gummies the only thing left in the house to eat? Any lawyer, good or bad, should be able to have that thrown the fuck out. This is just a case of dirty pigs throwing shit at the wall to see if it sticks, and continuing to discriminate against cannabis users.

I'm all for storing that shit where kids can't get them, but kids get into everything. Take your eyes off them for a second and you find them upstairs in some far corner playing with something you didn't even know you had.

Ex girlfriends step dad said he made some mushroom tea when she was just little. Said he put it on the counter and turned around, when he turned back around she had drank the whole tea! I said that really explained a lot and he just filled in a lot of gaps for me :P

I agree with you... It's sensationalist, and makes for good headlines. There are lots out there who are grasping at stories like this, and first chance they get to show their ignorance, they will be quoting these stories, explaining to others who will listen, using reefer madness arguments...

If the parent had left the gummies on the counter unsupervised, then he should be charged with something, but not this... If they at least made a reasonable attempt to keep them from the kids, ie, stashed in a drawer in their bedroom, then a warning should be sufficient, and let the parent come up with a better plan, since their kids are untrustworthy, and have been caught searching through their parents bedroom...

Actually, if this is going to be an issue, then it should be something like a firearms "improper storage" charge unless it results in death or harm, then something more...

I don't think the cannabis act has anything about improper storage... Personally, I don't think it needs it, except in cases like this where if this guy admits any convictions (assuming he is convicted) on a resume, he's not going to seem like a trustworthy person if he can't even provide the necessities of life for a child.... At least improper storage of cannabis, while some reefer madness types might hold it against him, it's nowhere near as ominous sounding... I think you're right, this is a fishing expedition, and if it was a city councillor, or business leader in the community, it would be a quet warning, and that would be it...

From an academic perspective...safety and security are a critical element of human needs. Having unsecured intoxicants available to children violates this. I don't disagree with the charges.
